Budapest to join ‘Under 2 MOU’ climate protection initiative
Budapest, December 2 (MTI) – Budapest plans to join the international climate protection initiative “Under 2 MOU”, the metropolitan council’s general assembly meeting decided on Wednesday.
The alliance was set up at the initiative of California and Baden-Wurttemberg by the leaders of twelve regions around the world in May this year.
The participants undertake to reduce green-house gas emissions from 1990’s level by 80 percent by the year 2050. According to scientists, such a reduction is necessary to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and prevent the increasingly serious consequences of climate change, the alliance said.
Since May, the alliance has been expanded to include 52 members, including the cities of Manchester, New York, San Francisco and Mexico City, the regions of Lombardy, Catalonia and Wales, and the countries of Holland, Italy and the UK. Accordingly, the alliance affects the residential areas of 520 million people.
Joining the initiative does not entail financial obligations for Budapest, which will be the first member from central and eastern Europe.
The general assembly meeting passed the proposal unanimously.
