Hungary’s bottle redemption system: Major change ahead, many consumers furious

MOHU Hungary's bottle redemption system

Many people in Hungary are frustrated with the MOHU bottle redemption system due to a range of operational issues that have surfaced since its launch. Consumers have reported problems with the machines frequently failing to recognise bottles, leading to long queues and confusion at collection points. Now, a new change will make customers even more furious.

Hungary’s bottle redemption system faces new limit

Blikk reports that Hungary’s bottle redemption system recently introduced a transaction limit, capping the number of redeemable bottles at 100 per session, equivalent to a maximum voucher value of HUF 5,000 (EUR 12.36). Implemented by MOHU, this update requires individuals looking to redeem more than 100 bottles to conduct separate transactions. This policy, which came into effect on 26 October, was highlighted by a notice on a vending machine, as reported by Pénzcentrum. The instructions also advise that any queries be directed to MOHU, the overseeing organisation for this redemption programme. Many people have already been frustrated by Hungary’s bottle redemption system, and now even more express their annoyance on social media platforms.

Lelépő writes that during a community archaeology excavation on 23 October in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, organised by the Herman Ottó Museum’s Archaeology Department and the MNM National Archaeological Institute, an extraordinary discovery was made. Volunteers from the National Institute’s Community Archaeology Programme uncovered several finds, but the standout artefact was a remarkably preserved 15th-century sword, discovered by volunteer Kristóf Monyók. This significant find, revealed during a metal detector search, is currently being examined further by experts, who anticipate more insights once the cleaning process is complete.

Hungarian Speaker: “No issue is more important in Europe today than demography”

Hungarian Speaker László Kövér

No issue is more important in Europe today than demography, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), in north-western Romania, on Friday, adding that the key question was whether Hungarians, Romanians and Europeans in general could populate the continent.

Kövér told the opening worship service of the festive synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Romania that while the question of who had arrived first in Transylvania was a “constant debate between Hungarians and Romanians”, the most important question was “who will survive on this land”.

The answer to this question, he said, would be provided by demography. The speaker said ethnic Hungarians in Transylvania were loyal to both the state of Romania and the Hungarian nation, and thereby strengthened ethnic peace in Romania and regional political stability.

Sick Hungarian incited ferrets on tied, small dog (Copy)

A sick Hungarian pervert dog keeper set ferrets on a small dog whose mouth he gagged. He laughed when the dog howled and lustfully cheered after the bites and encouraged the ferrets to murder the innocent animal. He also recorded the outrageous events.

The small dog could only whine

According to Tények, a Hungarian man from Tiszaszalka tortured his small dog with ferrets. He gagged the innocent animal’s mouth, put him in a small cage and lustfully cheered when the ferrets bit the dog.

Tények learned that he works as a rat exterminator. Allegedly, he tried to train the dog to attack only rats instead of ferrets. He made a video of his brutal deed Tények shared. Police are investigating the issue. The dog’s owner said he did not make the recording, somebody tried to compromise him.

He told the ferrets to kill the innocent dog, who was only able to howl and whine while running up and down in the small cage to evade the bites of the ferrets. The man sometimes shouted, “Die, dog!” and cheerfully laughed at the “joke”.

Hungarian government may give outstanding boost for Hungary’s tourism sector

Hotel Astoria2 hungary's tourism sector

National Economy Minister Márton Nagy asked Booking.com to start accepting SZÉP voucher card payments for domestic bookings at a meeting with the company’s public affairs manager for the region on Friday, his ministry said. Such a move would be an outstanding boost for Hungary’s tourism sector.

At the meeting with Katerina Shearer, Nagy also asked that Booking.com step up efforts to ensure communication with consumers and accommodations partners is transparent and the company fully complies with regulations and consumer protection obligations. He noted that Booking.com’s payment delays during the summer of 2023 had caused significant difficulties for a large number of tourism accommodations in Hungary.

The government is committed to ensuring Hungarian families’ vacations are trouble free, while also guaranteeing legal predictability for accommodations providers in their dealings with booking platforms, the ministry said.

Significant shift in Hungary’s weather: first snow on the horizon

Significant turn in Hungary's weather first snow approaches

Hungary has enjoyed an extended Indian summer this year. Aside from a brief cooler spell in September, the weather has remained mostly warm and dry. Even this weekend offers summer-like conditions for outdoor activities. However, a marked change is expected by Tuesday, with the first snow potentially arriving.

According to Tények, the news magazine of TV2, last October saw record-high temperatures, whereas this year’s temperatures have stayed closer to seasonal norms. Night-time lows are currently around 3–5°C, while daytime highs still reach approximately 15°C.

Tuesday will bring colder temperatures, strong winds, and increased precipitation. The Kőszegi Mountains, in particular, are likely to experience especially cold conditions, and snowfall could occur in the area next week.

Experts at MCC’s Climate Policy Institute note that temperatures in the Carpathian Basin are rising faster than in surrounding regions due to global warming. They report that winters and summers are now warmer than ever here, particularly in December and January. Additionally, the number of summer-like days (when temperatures exceed 25°C) has significantly increased during both autumn and spring.

Hungary’s commercial real estate market poised for slow recovery, says central bank report

commercial real estate budapest

Hungary’s commercial real estate market may have “bottomed out” and could be ahead of a “slow turnaround”, the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) said in a report on the sector published Thursday.

Tamás Nagy, a director at the NBH, said disappointing GDP had weighed on the sector but accelerated, broad-based growth could mitigate cyclical and structural risks. He acknowledged higher vacancy rates on the office and industrial-logistics property market, boosted by handovers amid modest demand, but said the NBH saw little risk if the vacancy rate continued to climb in the mid-term.

He said a record volume of projects in the pipeline would lift industrial-logistics property stock significantly in the coming two and a half years. Commercial property market investment in Hungary fell in H1 2024, but yields stagnated, he added. Outlays of commercial property loans climbed in the first half, even though lending conditions did not ease, he said. Improving consumer confidence has improved vacancy rates at shopping centres in the capital and other cities around the country, he added.
