Get to know Matt Fitzpatrick: US Open winner

The PGA Tour season is well underway and with spectators returning to golf courses around the world after two years of uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, normality looks to have resumed.

There’s already been plenty to discuss over the first half of the year — six months of entertainment littered with stories, ranging from the meteoric rise of Scottie Scheffler, who won this year’s Masters for his first major victory, to disagreements over the new Saudi-funded LIV Golf league that has established themselves, offering big money to some of the sport’s best.

Aside from all the controversy, the action on the course has been immense, and the US Open was no exception. Last year saw Jon Rahm victorious, living up to expectations as one of the favourites amongst the golf betting odds, but over the last few months we’ve seen his form nosedive somewhat, struggling in the Memorial Tournament and PGA Championships. Currently ranked number three in the world, his inconsistency paved the way for a new winner in Brookline, Massachusetts — Matt Fitzpatrick.

The English golfer, born in Sheffield, won a maiden major title at the County Club, edging past Will Zalatoris to reign supreme on American shores. Holding his nerve on the 18th green, the 27-year-old’s two-putt for par was enough to settle the victory, and it was clear to see how much it meant to both him and his family, who swarmed onto the course the second they could, elation painted on each of their faces.

Having come tied-for-fifth in the PGA Championship, perhaps exceeding expectations and overachieving somewhat, the free golf tips had him down to cause an upset, and after carrying that good form from Tulsa into the County Club, a 13th hole birdie putt from 48 feet gave him the ascendancy, and despite a hiccup at the 15th, in which his six-under lead was threatened by Zalatoris, the American’s bogey set up a remarkable bunker shot for Fitzpatrick on the 18th to secure victory.

Fitzpatrick

“It’s the one place I didn’t want to be — No. 1 on that list,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’m a fast player, and when I look back, it just all happened so fast,” he said of his second shot at the 18th. “It was like just kind of let natural ability take over. I thought: try to hit it close”

“Although it doesn’t come across, because I like to be quite reserved, I just love beating everyone,” he said. “It’s as simple as that. Just love winning. I want to beat everyone.”

With eight other European Tour victories to his name, including a British Masters win as well as becoming the first Englishman to win a US Amateur title, Fitzpatrick will gain much needed experience from the US Open escapade, now moving to number ten in the world, almost catching up to one of his idols in the game Rory Mcilroy.

The Northern Irishman showed a touch of class when he also congratulated him after the win, and despite a couple of capitulations from fast starts, you feel the 33-year-old is long overdue for a win in a major himself. Only time will tell if Fitzpatrick will kick on from here, but with performances like the one he showed in Brookline he could very well become one of Britain’s best.

Canadian men’s water polo team leaves Budapest due to health reasons

Canada water polo

The men’s water polo team of Canada has withdrawn from the world championship tournament under way in Budapest, the Canadian Water Polo Association announced on its website on Saturday.

The “difficult decision” was made after “careful consideration” and “an open discussion with the athletes”, it said.

“This decision was made in order to ensure and preserve the short and long-term overall health, safety and well-being of participants, which always remains Water Polo Canada’s first and foremost priority,” the association said.

According to press reports, several members of the team have been infected with the coronavirus. After Canada’s withdrawal, group C features only three teams, namely Italy, Spain and the Republic of South Africa.

Football: Hungarians moved up three places in world rankings!

Hungary England triumph football

The Hungarian national team has improved three places to 37th in the International Football Federation (FIFA) world rankings. Brazil is still the leader of the rankings.

Compared to the last ranking, published at the end of March, the Hungarians were able to move up thanks to their victory over fifth-placed England as hosts and then guests in the June group stage of the Nations League, while they drew with Germany at the Puskás Arena, as 168.hu reports.

England retained their previous position, the Germans improved one place, while European champions Italy – who missed out on the World Cup – lost to Hungary and slipped back one place to seventh.

The only change in the podium was that the Argentinians, previously fourth, knocked the defending World Cup champions France down from third.

The Hungarian men’s saber team is European champion

Hungarian men's sword team wins gold medal

The men’s fencing team of Áron Szilágyi, András Szatmári, Csanád Gémesi, Tamás Decsi won the gold medal on Monday at the European Fencing Championships in Antalya, after defeating the Ukrainian team 45-39 in the early evening final.

The Hungarian quartet started the fourth day of competition in the last eight, beating Poland and France in the semi-finals.

In the final, the Hungarians then had a tough time against the Ukrainians, who are much lower down the world rankings.

“It’s not really our problem that the favourites went out early this time. We did our job and I am very proud of the boys! A gold medal is never given for free and this team proved that they are ready for the next challenges after Tokyo,” head coach András Decsi told the Hungarian federation’s website.

Csanád Gémesi said that four years ago they won the European Championship under completely different circumstances, yet he can’t distinguish between the two gold medals.

“This time we became European champions in a tournament where we were the favourites all along, we talked about it during the day, that this is a different situation than the previous ones. But we solved this one, Csanád was great as always and we added what we needed with Szatyi. I won my third European gold medal, but it wasn’t boring at all!” – said Áron Szilágyi.

Szatmári noted that it was not easy to cope with the burden of being an underdog. With the phrase “everything is good if the end is good”, he also referred to the fact that they managed to improve after the individual struggles without a medal.

The men’s sabre team, bronze medallists at the Tokyo Olympics, last won a continental event in 2018, their eighth triumph overall. And this time, the Turkish delegation won its first medal.

IOC President Bach: Hungarian Olympic movement ‘world-leading’

Photo: MTI

The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday visited Budapest, the site of the World Aquatics Championships.

Thomas Bach noted that Hungary has hosted many world and European championships in recent years, and that all events had passed “exceptionally well”.

“The icing on the cake is that the athletes, too, are successful; they’re real role models for the Hungarian people. So being in Hungary once again is a very good experience,” Bach said.

Referring to the Duna Arena which hosts swimming events, he said the Hungarian audience not only cheered their own competitors but everyone else, too, and he praised the atmosphere of FINA World Championship events in Budapest.

Looking ahead to the next Olympics, he said expectations were high for the Hungarian swimming team in Paris.

Regarding the organisation of the World Championships, he noted that Hungary had had 131 days to prepare for the event, proving its flexibility, creativity and efficiency. For the 2027 event, which Hungary won in 2019, the country will be even better prepared, he said.

“Budapest is a beautiful, sports-loving city, as is the country as a whole. Walking about here, you’re surrounded by history, but when you go to a sporting event, you see the future,” Bach said.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received Bach at his offices on Monday, details HERE.

Budapest bidding to host 2026 track and field European championships

Budapest athletics stadium

European Athletics representatives recently visited the cities of Budapest and Birmingham after the Hungarian Athletics Association (Magyar Atlétikai Szövetség) and UK Athletics had been confirmed as the two bidding Member Federations looking to host the 2026 European Athletics Championships, the European Athletics Association (EAA) said on Monday.

“We have two excellent candidates for the 2026 European Athletics Championships, with both potential Local Organising Committees having great experience staging major outdoor athletics events. They also have excellent stadia and either one of them would make an excellent host,” said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov.

“Birmingham will stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Budapest will be the host of the 2023 World Athletics Championships and so by 2026 they will be able to draw on these experiences. In the past, these cities have also staged outstanding global and continental events and they both have a great legacy in this respect,” added Karamarinov.

“European Athletics would also like to confirm, following a recent European Athletics Council decision, that the 2026 European Athletics Championships will be organised as a stand-alone event like that in Rome in two years time,” commented European Athletics CEO Christian Milz.

“The involvement and cooperation with the host member federation is especially important for European Athletics at our major events and we believe being independent, as the European Athletics Championships were until 2016, will strengthen this relationship as well as help create a special athletics experience for the competitors, athletics fans, and every other stakeholder in our sport, such as commercial partners, and provide enhanced international visibility and profile,” added Milz.

Budapest was the first of the two 2026 candidates to receive European Athletics representatives and was visited on 7-8 June, followed immediately by the delegation visiting Birmingham on 9-10 June.

A decision about which city will stage 2026 European Athletics Championships will be made by the European Athletics Council in November 2022.

As we wrote before, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe visited Hungary’s National Athletics Centre, under construction in the south of the capital, read details HERE.

Hungarian team wins – England outraged?

Hungary-England-football-victory

Hungarian football team gained another amazing win this week against England. A British tabloid has started a “petition” to stop the English national team from playing against the Hungarians. Find out more about the above-mentioned, and what their national press had to say below.

Hungarians defeat England yet again

On Tuesday night, the Hungarian team won against the English national team, with no less than 4 goals scored by our team. The English team could not manage to score a single goal. England, silver medallists in the European Championship, have so far been very poor in the Nations League. Furthermore, the English press has been very vocal about their performance. The biggest newspapers in the country are not forgetting the great performance of the Hungarians.

A few weeks ago here in Hungary, the home team was able to win 1-0 against the English.

The BBC reports – “Hungary really beat England. It is the first time since 2014 that England has not won any of their four consecutive matches and it is worrying that their form and confidence are not back as the World Cup approaches. England was unable to do more than resign themselves to a humiliating and possibly devastating defeat, after which the fans not only booed but demanded the dismissal of Gareth Southgate. England must realise that Marco Rossi had built a versatile and hard-to-beat Hungarian team.”

“For the fourth time in eleven days, Southgate could not achieve victory. The Hungarians deservedly beat last summer’s European Championship finalists. England has not scored an action goal in four games and has not had such a long run in eight years.” – tells The Sun.

England’s “petition” against Hungarian team

It’s no wonder then that the British were scared, reports Blikk. They don’t seem to want to mince their words, at least one British tabloid, The Sun Football, has launched a “petition” in a post on Twitter to stop the English team from facing the Hungarian national team.

It’s a match that the English will certainly not forget for a while, but we will remember it forever. The Hungarian national team is getting stronger and playing better matches. In September, the Nations League will resume, where the team can show once again that Hungarian football did not end with the Golden Team.

PM Orbán holds talks with IOC president Thomas Bach

PM Orbán holds talks with IOC president Thomas Bach

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán discussed topical international sports matters and Hungarian aid provided to Ukrainian athletes with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, in Budapest on Monday.

The meeting was also attended by Zsolt Gyulay, head of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB), Pál Schmitt, Hungary’s former president, Balázs Fürjes, a state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, and IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper.

World Aquatics Championships in Budapest

President Katalin Novák opened the 19th World Aquatics Championships in Budapest on Saturday.

Novák noted that organisers had just four months to prepare to host the worlds and said they had “set a world record on dry land”. She acknowledged the athletes who had to train in difficult conditions and without knowing if or when there would be a world championships amid the pandemic.

Hungary hopes to keep hosting at a similar frequency, she said, adding that it would be the venue for the short course worlds in 2024. Hungary hosted the World Aquatics Championships in 2017.
