Christmas movies worth watching at least once in a lifetime
It’s that time of the year when all channels are playing the classic Christmas movies after one another. It is guaranteed that you get in the Christmas spirit after watching them. Tvgo.hu collected a few of them from black & white movies to modern romantic comedies.
It’s a Wonderful Life
It is a 1946 American Christmas fantasy drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra, in an inexpressibly heart-stirring and touching way. An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like, if he never existed. Thanks to James Stewart’s amazing performance we get to like the main character just like everyone else does.
Home Alone
There is no Christmas without Kevin! The movie is a 1990 American Christmas comedy film written and produced by John Hughes. An 8-year old troublemaker must protect his home from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation. Most of us know at least one saying from the movie and we cannot get tired of the adventures of Kevin played by Macaulay Culkin.
Christmas Vacation
It is a 1989 Christmas comedy film directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik and is the third instalment in National Lampoon’s Vacation film series. It is Christmastime and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration, but things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen and their two kids. Clark’s continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests. Still, he manages to keep going knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon.
Elf
Elf is a 2003 American Christmas comedy film directed by Jon Favreau. After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search for his true identity. He is surely the one on the list who always feels the Christmas spirit.
The Nightmare before Christmas
It is a 1993 American stop motion dark fantasy musical film produced and conceived by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, a character from “Halloween Town” who opens a portal to “Christmas Town” and decides to celebrate the holiday, with some dastardly and comical consequences. This might be less of a sweet movie, with its many horror features at least.
Love Actually
When it comes to Christmastime romantic comedies, the perfect choice is Love Actually written and directed by Richard Curtis. The plot follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England. You’ll find a favourite scene for sure and sing along to ‘Christmas is All Around’.
Scrooged
It is a 1988 American Christmas comedy film, a modernization of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Frank Cross (Bill Murray) is a selfish, cynical man who runs a US TV station. Frank’s childhood wasn’t a particularly pleasant one, and so he doesn’t really appreciate the Christmas spirit. With the help of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, Frank realises he must change.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This is a classic story that everyone knows. It is a 2000 American family comedy Christmas film based on the 1957 story of the same name by Dr. Seuss. On the outskirts of Whoville, there lives a green, revenge-seeking Grinch (Jim Carrey) who plans on ruining the Christmas holiday for all of the citizens of the town. He is a nasty green creature yet a small child, Cindy Lou Who, decides to try befriending the Grinch.
Bad Santa
This is probably the most anomalous Christmas movie with the most anomalous Santa. “Bad Santa” is the story of two conmen who go on a road trip to malls dressed as Santa and his elf to rob department stores. Rather than spreading good cheer, the duo’s motive is to rob each establishment, a strategy that becomes complicated when they encounter an 8-year-old kid who teaches them the true meaning of Christmas.
The Santa Claus
It is a 1994 American Christmas fantasy family comedy film directed by John Pasquin. It stars Tim Allen as Scott Calvin, an ordinary man who accidentally causes Santa Claus to fall from his roof on Christmas Eve. He finds himself magically recruited to take Santa’s place. The funniest scenes are when he gradually transforms into Santa Claus no matter how much he tries to resist.
The Holiday
It is a 2006 American romantic comedy movie written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Two women troubled with guy-problems swap homes in each other’s countries, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love. An enchanting movie with an impressive cast.
