Coronavirus, US elections, Google Classroom – our most searched topics in 2020
As we slowly approach the end of the year, Google published the most searched topics of 2020. Coronavirus won both in Hungary and worldwide, followed by the US presidential elections.
It might not come as a surprise that this year coronavirus was the most searched topic on Google. As Qubit reported, globally speaking, the US presidential elections were the second and Kobe Bryant the third most searched topics. Google also did categorical analyses: Tom Hanks was the most searched actor and Among Us the most searched game.
What about Hungary?
Similarly to the global statistics, Hungarians were mostly interested in coronavirus. The second most searched topic was also the same; US presidential elections, and thirdly, we were interested in Google Classroom.
Kobe Bryant is the tenth on the list, following the Hungarian National Gazette. Many people searched for recipes and books, too, the most popular of these were Hungarian crepes and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
The big question of 2020 that was asked by many people was ‘what day is it?’ – it was searched for more times than ever. Why the new coronavirus is called COVID-19, why Mars is red and why people do clap were also popular questions. And people were looking for tips for hair dyeing and cutting, as well. Americans mostly searched for dessert recipes during the lockdown.
Besides coronavirus, the other true global recorder is sourdough. It seems like lockdown turned many people into potential home bakers – since the 15th of May, 2020, the views on sourdough videos on YouTube increased by 260 %.
YouTube’s statistics of the year represent similar trends throughout the world. In 2020, more people were looking for beauty videos and recipe videos, but also sports and home workout videos became popular during the pandemic; the most searched ones were yoga and guided meditation. Live streaming also became more popular.
As during the pandemic, online dating became more significant than ever, many people wanted to learn about how quarantine dates, and online dating in general work. People also looked for dating tips broadly, and date ideas for after the pandemic is over.
