Ukrainian mercenaries tried to take over the largest ironworks in Hungary and plan to return?

A reader of 24.hu noticed significant police activity in Dunaújváros, around Vasmű, on Friday night. They wrote that – according to rumours – the Ukrainian owners were trying to invade the premises while workers were not allowed inside.

There has been no intrusion and anyone who claims otherwise is lying,

stated István Mikó, the authorised representative of Steelhold Limited, to 24.hu in his announcement in relation to what happened at Dunaferr.

24.hu wrote on Friday night that there was significant police activity in Dunaújváros, in the vicinity of the ironworks. Dunaujvaros.com wrote that the dispute over the ownership of the Dunaferr group had escalated. Tamás Pintér, the mayor of the city, told 24.hu that about fifty people who seemed like security guards were trying to get into the factory.

ISD Dunaferr issued a statement entitled: The night the mercenary team wanted to invade DUNAFERR with Ukrainian minority ownership. It stated:

After the verbal and legal aggression of recent months – as well as several threatening messages -, István Mikó and his team prepared for physical aggression. Mikó acts on behalf of DUNAFERR’s Ukrainian minority owner, Tatiana Taruta and her associates, and according to DUNAFERR, he was prepared to invade the ironworks with a team of recruited mercenaries. A team of men with military-esque bald heads were arrested by the authorities on Friday evening.

According to the statement, in Ukraine, a similar method has already been used to occupy multiple factories.

In his statement on the case, Mikó summarises what happened as follows:

Once again, we are trying to prevent the liquidation of the company, the further concealing of the theft of assets, leaving suppliers and public debts unpaid in favour of the 99.64% owner of ISD Dunaferr Dunai Vasmű Zrt. and the company’s thousands of employees.

In the statement, Mikó lists the details he claims to have probative value, which he recommends the mayor of Jobbik to pay attention to.

Regarding the conflict between the parties, he stated:

There is no Ukrainian or Russian debate to be talked about. I am a Hungarian citizen myself and have the interests of Hungarian workers and suppliers in mind. It is also inconceivable that Hungarian taxpayers should pay ISD Dunaferr Zrt. HUF 100 billion for the damage caused by the ex-company management.

Finally, he stated that the majority owner of ISD Dunaferr Zrt. was trying to save the company, but apparently, this is not in anyone’s interest in Dunaújváros at all.

Mikó also told Index about further details. According to him, a total of 500 people from various security companies were present at the scene, with the aim of taking over the area of the property. After being asked if they would try again, he answered yes, but next time, they will come prepared with a larger team of 600-800 people. He said this can hopefully come about as soon as possible.
