2026 Hungarian Elections: highest voter turnout ever! – UPDATE

Turnout in Hungary election 2026 stood at 16.89% by 9 AM on Sunday, with 1,271,768 eligible voters casting ballots by that time, according to figures published by the National Election Office (NVI), MTI reports.

The highest turnout at 9 AM was recorded in Békés County at 18.61% (47,754 voters), while the lowest was in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County at 14.13% (67,753 voters).

In Budapest, 15.96% of voters had voted by 9 AM, representing 202,934 people.

For comparison, turnout by 9am was 9.80% in the first round of the 1998 parliamentary election, 8.81% in 2002, 11.39% (first round) in 2006, 10.23% in 2010, 9.50% in 2014, 13.17% in 2018, and 10.31% in 2022, according to NVI data.

UPDATE: Hungary election 2026: 11 AM – National turnout: 37.98%

Compared to 25.77% four years ago, turnout in the parliamentary election had already reached 37.98% by 11 a.m. This is an exceptional figure. In 2018, turnout did not reach 30 percent at this time, and in the elections of the past two and a half decades, it remained well below that level, as shown in our chart.

Voter Turnout – 11 a.m. – Budapest – 36.98 percent

According to data from the National Election Office (NVI), 36.98 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballots in the capital by 11 a.m. on Sunday during the parliamentary election.

In Budapest, according to data from 7 a.m., 3.45 percent of the 1,271,000 eligible voters—43,889 voters—had cast their ballots. By 9 a.m., 15.96 percent of eligible voters (202,934 voters) had cast their ballots, and by 11 a.m., 36.98 percent of eligible voters (470,230 voters) had gone to the polls.

UPDATE – 1:00 PM – 54.14 percent

According to data from the National Election Office (NVI), 54.14 percent of eligible voters—4,075,272 voters—had cast their ballots by 1 p.m. in Sunday’s parliamentary election.

Voter turnout was highest in Pest County at 1:00 p.m., at 58.01 percent, representing 609,511 voters. The lowest turnout was in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, at 47.62 percent, with 198,192 voters casting ballots in that county.

In the capital, 56.77 percent of voters—721,838 eligible voters—had cast their ballots by 1:00 p.m.

In the first round of the 1998 parliamentary election, 32.58 percent had voted by 1:00 p.m., and in the 2002 election, 40.19 percent had voted by 1:00 p.m. In the first round of the 2006 parliamentary election, 38.22 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots; in the 2010 election, 35.88 percent; in the 2014 election, 34.33 percent; eight years ago, 42.32 percent; and

40.01 percent four years ago.

Voter Turnout – 3 PM

According to data from the National Election Office (NVI), 66.01 percent of eligible voters—4,968,713 voters—had cast their ballots by 3:00 p.m. on Sunday in the parliamentary election.

Voter turnout was highest in Pest County at 3:00 p.m., at 69.67 percent, representing 731,952 voters. The lowest turnout was in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, at 60.08 percent, with 288,163 voters casting ballots in that county.

In the capital, 69.23 percent of voters—880,173 eligible voters—had cast their ballots by 3:00 p.m.

In the first round of the 1998 parliamentary election, 39.28 percent had voted by 3:00 p.m., and in the 2002 election, 51.78 percent had voted by that time. In the first round of the 2006 parliamentary election, 48.89 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots; in the 2010 election, 46.78 percent; in the 2014 election, 45.02 percent; eight years ago, 53.64 percent; and 52.75 percent four years ago.

UPDATE – Voter Turnout – 5:00 PM – 74.23 percent

According to data from the National Election Office (NVI), 74.23 percent of eligible voters—5,587,935 voters—had cast their ballots by 5 p.m. in Sunday’s parliamentary election.Sátoraljaújhely, April 12, 2026. At 5:00 p.m., voter turnout was highest in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, at 78.19 percent, representing 281,671 voters. The lowest turnout was in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, at 68.13 percent, with 326,763 voters casting ballots in that county.

In the capital, 77.18 percent of voters, or 981,358 voters, had cast their ballots by 5 p.m.

In previous parliamentary elections up to 2018, the final turnout figures were released at 5:30 p.m. instead of 5:00 p.m. In the first round of the 1998 parliamentary election, 49.52 percent had voted by 5:30 p.m., and in the 2002 election, 65.56 percent had voted by that time. In the first round of the 2006 parliamentary election, 61.72 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballots by 5:30 p.m.; in the 2010 election, 59.28 percent; and eight years ago, 56.77 percent. Eight years ago, 63.21 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballots by 5:00 p.m., and four years ago, 62.92 percent had done so.

Final voter turnout

In a statement to the press at the National Election Office (NVI) headquarters, Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, said that according to currently available data, 77.8 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots.
