Breaking: Hungarian parliament approves new law concerning employment

Lawmakers approved legislation establishing a new category of employment for guest workers on Tuesday.

The legislation was approved with a vote of 135 for, 47 against and 10 abstentions.

The new rules allow labourers from countries outside of the European Economic Area to reside in Hungary for periods longer than 90 days as long as they can produce proper travel documents, have a place to stay, can cover their cost of living and comply with security requirements.

Guest workers may stay in the country for up to two years, with the chance for a one-year extension, and they may resubmit their application to remain in the country at the end of the three-year period.

The law allows the government to lay down detailed rules regarding guest workers, set annual thresholds and determine a list of countries from which guest workers may come by decree.

Parliament adopts national innovation strategy

Parliament on Tuesday voted to give the green light to a new national innovation strategy dubbed the Neumann János Programme, aimed at facilitating links between universities, research institutes, and the economy.

The nine strategic measures included in the package were designed to reinforce a knowledge-based economy through further developing existing institutions and launching new programmes, the ministry of culture and innovation told MTI.

Concerning details of the programme, the ministry said they would “put Hungarian research into an international orbit” and help innovative ideas in foreign markets. Innovative investments will focus on “healthy lifestyles, the green transition, digitalisation and security”, while researchers will benefit from predictable career models, the ministry said.

The programme will create scientific and innovation parks to facilitate cooperation between universities and businesses, and innovation support will be rolled out to communities in the Carpathian Basin, it added.

Under the new package, the Eötvös Loránd Research Network will be renamed Hungarian Research Network to ensure that the organisation is “easily and clearly recognised” in the international community, “contributing to enhancing Hungary’s popularity and prestige”, the ministry said.

  3. Not good. It should have been restricted to the neighboring countries only. What’s going to happen is that the likes of Indians, Pakistanis, and others will come, by the tens of thousand, stay here the 2+1 years, use their family connection to get married to a long-term resident or set up some kind of a nominal job, and they’ll stay here permanently. What’s 100% sure is that almost none of them will ever go back home. That’s the playbook they’ve been using all over the Western world for decades.
