FM Szijjártó: Migration wave from Myanmar could reach Europe

Several hundreds of thousands of migrants from Myanmar could leave for Europe unless the authorities get a grip on the situation there, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said during an official visit on Tuesday.

Speaking from Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital city, Szijjártó told MTI by phone that “it is in the security interest of Europe and Hungary to forestall a wave of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Myanmar”.

“For this reason, Hungary supports Myanmar’s efforts to overcome the current situation,” he said, adding that

Hungary supports Myanmar’s reforms needed to build the democratic institutional system and stabilise the country’s economy in order to overcome the political and economic causes of migration.

Hungary has offered favourable credit for projects in the area of water management and agriculture, which are important from an economic development point of view, he said. Hungary also supports Myanmar in international organisations, he added.

Also, there are several Hungarian firms on the Myanmar market that are aiding the digital economy, thereby enhancing the country’s competitiveness, Szijjártó said.

Szijjártó attended the foreign ministers’ Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) before holding bilateral talks in Myanmar with the country’s president, education minister and trade minister.
