Renovated popular thermal bath reopens at full capacity in Budapest

On August 1, the nearly century-old Dandár Thermal Bath in Budapest’s 9th District reopened its fully renovated interior to the public. The modernisation project brought not only technical improvements but also a refreshed aesthetic—offering visitors a 21st-century environment for relaxation and healing.

Budapest’s popular thermal bath repoens at full capacity

The Budapest Spas and Hot Springs Inc. (BGYH) designated the project as one of its key investments. Originally planned to include tiling and insulation upgrades, demolition work revealed that the ceiling structure was in such poor condition that major structural interventions were necessary. As a result, the original budget of HUF 68 million (EUR 170,000) grew to approximately HUF 100 million (EUR 250,000).

The turizmus.com reports that the renovation was carried out in two phases: while the outdoor pools and a completely revamped sauna area have been open since last December, the interior pool area has only just been completed. The upgrades included installation of new mechanical systems, replacement of doors and windows, and renovation of shower and restroom tiling. Outdoor pool grout was redone, sun sails were added for shade during summer visits, and both the filtration and circulation systems underwent thorough maintenance.

At Friday’s reopening, BGYH CEO Ildikó Borosné Szűts emphasised that the most challenging aspect of the renovation was addressing the structural issues, but the end result has exceeded all expectations. The new interior color scheme and modern design strike a balance between tradition and contemporary standards.

You can visit from 1 August

Dandár Thermal Bath has been a fixture of the city since 1930 and remains one of Budapest’s most popular spas. Mayor Gergely Karácsony noted that “Dandár Bath has served the health and rejuvenation needs of Budapest residents for 95 years. In recent years, it’s also played an increasingly prominent role in recreation. It’s a pleasure to see it operating at full capacity again with modern yet affordable services.”

On opening day, visitors were treated to special events including acoustic guitar music, a sound bowl session, sauna programs, and even free refreshing massages in the new sauna. A daily ticket cost HUF 3,000 (EUR 7,50) and granted access to the entire facility.

Krisztina Baranyi, mayor of Ferencváros, praised the renewal project, saying any city would be proud to have a facility of such high quality. Guests can now enjoy modern, European-standard spa services that promote both relaxation and wellness.

It’s worth noting that the thermal waters at Dandár are only available to visitors aged 14 and above. Demand was already high from day one, with guests lining up before 9 a.m. to be among the first to experience the upgraded indoor area.

In recent years, BGYH has seen remarkable growth, and according to the latest data, the company closed 2024 as Hungary’s leading spa operator, increasing its revenue. The renovation of Dandár Bath is a testament to the capital’s ongoing commitment to improving its spa facilities—not only for tourism but for public health as well.
