Transforming Debrecen University: New facilities and major campus revitalisation
Debrecen University is set to undergo a significant expansion, with the development of a new Nutrition Science Centre, transforming and extending an existing building. The university has launched a call for proposals to find a contractor to construct this facility near the Faculty of Economics on Akadémiakert Street. The Centre will also feature a food processing and packaging demonstration facility, repurposing a previously renovated food processing building and agricultural storage units.
This project is part of a broader wave of developments at Debrecen University, marking the sixth major initiative in recent months, Magyar Építők reports. Key projects include:
- Revitalisation of the Natural Science Centre
- Restoration of the main building’s façade on the Böszörményi Road campus
- Comprehensive refurbishment of the university’s historic main building
- Overhaul of the Theoretical Complex (Elméleti Tömb) high-rise, home to medical education
Debrecen University’s upgrade
Since last summer, Debrecen University has also been upgrading and expanding its Faculty of Engineering, adding a new wing and nearly 4,500 square meters to its existing structure.
This latest project aims to align with Debrecen’s growing role in the automotive industry, Magyar Építők wrote in a July article. The ongoing modernisation of the Faculty of Engineering, particularly the Ótemető Street complex, is part of the broader establishment of the Debrecen Automotive Centre, linked to the new BMW factory in the city. Funded by government resources amounting to nearly HUF 11 billion (EUR 28 million), this expansion will ultimately bring the complex’s size to over 12,000 square meters.
New educational wing
The modernisation process, planned in four phases, will soon commence with the construction of a new educational wing and main entrance on Virág Street. This new section will house classrooms, laboratories, student community spaces, and offices, with some of the engineering laboratories ready by the start of the next academic year.
Dean Géza Husi of the Faculty of Engineering highlighted the need for expansion due to a significant increase in student numbers, growing from 2,000 in 2006 to over 3,000 today. Responding to the needs of the automotive and supplier industries in Debrecen, the faculty continues to update its educational portfolio to ensure graduates are equipped with the necessary skills and experience. Plans are also in place to introduce new courses in technical logistics and biomedical engineering.
The extensive renovation, expected to be completed in four years, will provide students with modern spaces for individual and group projects, alongside new state-of-the-art equipment, significantly enhancing the learning environment and potentially boosting enrollment numbers further.
