Direct air travel is expected to start again between Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital and Budapest this year, airportal.hu reports.
The restoration of direct, almost daily flights between the two capitals would be a great step towards the strengthening of Hungarian-Bosnian relations.
The government brief also reported that Wizz Air airline is planning significant developments in Sarajevo.
Currently the company has a base in Tusla, but they would like to extend their Bosnian presence by including Sarajevo as well. The state secretary said that the plans, which require approximately 100 million Euros, are supported by the government.
The Ministry of National Development has disclosed plans to support other Western Balkan routes as well, such as Podgorica, Tirana, Pristina, and Skopje. In the end, plans for Sofia were discarded; instead, Sarajevo appeared as part of the chosen destinations.
The government tender for the operation of these air routes is being released in the coming days. Any airline registered within the EU can apply, more details are not yet known.
