Polish PM Tusk: Orbán is in Putin’s team if blocks sanctions; FM Szijjártó: Tusk is a Soros-agent

“If PM Viktor Orbán really blocks European sanctions at a key moment for the war, it’ll be absolutely clear that in this big game for the security and future of Europe, he is playing in Putin’s team, not in ours. With all the consequences of this fact”, the Polish prime minister wrote in an X port. FM Szijjártó reacted to the harsh message from Warsaw by saying the PM Tusk was a Soros agent, which means that the official Hungarian-Polish relationship reached a historic low.

Hungary will not pay the price of other people’s wars, “and we won’t allow anyone to put our energy security at risk”, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said in reaction to a post of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Tusk, who also holds the rotating presidency of the European Council, said on Facebook in Polish: “If [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán actually blocks European sanctions … it will become absolutely clear that … he is playing for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s team, not on ours.”

Szijjártó on Saturday responded on Facebook: “This may be hard for an agent of Soros to understand, but if it comes to teams, we are playing on the Hungarian team. That’s why we represent Hungarian interests: we aren’t willing to pay the price of the wars of others, and we won’t allow anyone to put Hungary’s energy supply at risk. Because for us, it’s Hungary first.”

Later on Saturday, Szijjártó had talks over the phone with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign and security affairs chief. Szijjártó noted that the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council will meet on Monday to decide whether the sanctions against Russia should be maintained. “The picture is clear: we won’t pay the price of other people’s wars or at the same time allow our energy security to be put at risk,” he said. “There is no need to try to convince us; what we need are guarantees from Ukraine,” he added.

Europe needs peace, not war, political director Orbán says

Europe needs peace since, regardless of the war’s outcome, it stands to lose if the war continues, the prime minister’s political director, Balázs Orbán, told a conference in Budapest on Saturday. Orbán told the Peace Conference organised by the Rubicon Institute that ending the conflict was “in Europe’s fundamental interest”, and this should happen “as soon as possible”, he said.

According to “relevant literature”, interstate wars lasting more than a year were “the most dangerous” as they threatened to last for decades, Orbán said. “The longer a war lasts, the harder it is to conclude it,” he explained. Further, conflicts without parallel negotiations were usually the “bloodiest, the highest-intensity conflicts”, he added.

He said starting the negotiations did not require a detailed peace plan in advance, as the first step would be a ceasefire. “For peace, we need to restore communication, achieve a truce and active mediation, not sanctions and threats,” he said.

  1. Hungarians should blame them self for this “historic low point” in polish Hungarian relationship. Calling anyone woke, pro war, liberal and so on is just a very childish way to blame other ones. Always using the old-trusty “hungary first” when you are part of an union. Please do everyone a favor a leave. No one will miss you.

    • Dear Taco-eater, we don’t need to take advice from a non-European like you.
We want peace and cheap gas.
We don’t need nazi-EU. Seems like people didn’t learn from the past by supporting for eu & ukraine-nazism.
José, go back to your shithole as we don’t need your input

  2. Just when you think they can’t go any lower, they do. Accusing the Polish PM of being part of an international conspiracy movement that seeks to actively subvert security in Europe. They’ve hit the bottom, Hungary has lost what little residual international respect that it posessed, its leading lights appear to have no idea about diplomacy or how quickly a reputation is trashed while how slowly it can be regained. I couldn’t care less about the future of the government but circa 16 million Hungarian souls in Hungary and around the world will pay a heavy price for the trashing of their national pride. Hungary seems to have decided to enter a cold war with most of the world for reasons that aren’t entirely clear beyond seeking a state of constant conflagration. If the nation doesn’t elect a new government in 2026 I’ve written the country off for the rest of my days.

  3. Tusk is a (failed) career politician. He was living it high on the hog in Brussels for years, achieving absolutely nothing. He is a card-carrying, fully paid-up member of the globalist-socialist-fascist cabal (or, more accurately, their little puppet – one among very many: in politics, in media, in academia, in “N.G.O.s,” etc.).

Fact is, perpetuating this war is not in the interest of a single ordinary human being living in any part of Europe. Besides, all these sanctions have had precisely ZERO impact on Russia or Putin, but they have hurt us pretty bad.

Enough is enough. The regular people choose peace.

  4. Michael Steiner – your comments just continuously leave your-self to literally be “pulled apart” in the “blindness” – the narrow mindedness, content(s) of your commentary subjects.
WHO “proactively” commenced this Russian War on the Ukraine ?
    WHO invaded the Ukraine ?
Steiner – your commentaries, never are contributed with the FACT – coming out of your commentary contributions, the name Russia, that Russia commenced the War against the Ukraine.
NO – don’t take the position – to “claim back” lands that were there’s.
Steiner – you are a FULLY paid up member of the Fidesz Political Party.
Your LOYALITY could be said devotion to Victor Orban to you a Demi-god figure, in full support of his “Judas” acts of attempting to CRUSH – the distillation of DEMOCRACY in Hungary, favouring, supporting a RETURN to the “commies” days in Hungary, idiotic position you adapt believing Hungary can Stand alone, leave the E.U. & N.A.T.O. – CRAZED.
Travelling “smoothly” – is Orban and “your” boys.
Hungary, is in a place of RUINATION.

  5. I live in Poland and Tusk is an influential political actor both domestically and internationally. Two time prime minister who led the winning coalition against the government at the time which was getting advice from Budapest.

Orban and Szijjarto are russian stooges who are busy destroying hungary’s international reputation.

Neither ever criticizes russia and when they say ‘peace’ they mean ‘Ukranian surrender’.

Hungary keeps digging itself into a hole….. so sad to see.

    • I couldn’t agree more, Cliff. Anecdotally Poland appears to be booming while offering a significantly better standard of living with better public services than Hungary. Is this your experience, too? Things are getting very shaky here and I’m looking to move.

  6. Not much I need to add here except my agreement with five out of six posts. The whole Soros meme that Fidesz pushes is for those who can’t think for themselves. Hungary is in great danger of going past a point of no return if it does not get rid of this government in 2026. I fear that Fidesz will never leave except through force. Elections already have been and will increasingly be fixed so it doesn’t matter if a majority votes against them. They won’t give up power.

  7. Cliff, Tusk is a socialist EU puppet. Poland ceded sovereignty when elected Tusk. When the EU says jump, Polish people will say how high. Poles never developed a backbone. Poles still support Ukraine that murdered 100,000 Poles.

    • For perspective: there is a reason why Poland has the highest relative defense spend within the EU and NATO – something to do with You-Know-Who – who our Politicians are asking us to trust.

During World War II, the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland in 1939, leading to the death or arrest of tens of thousands of Polish military personnel and civilians.

Subsequently in 1940, Mr. Stalin ordered the NKVD to perpetrate what is now known as Katyn Massacre, in which 22´000 Polish officers, intellectuals, and other elites were executed.

Then there were deportations to Siberia and Kazakhstan. An estimated 300´000–1 million Poles were moved to the gulags (Soviet labor camps), where many perished due to harsh conditions, starvation, and forced labor. Add another 50´000 to 100´000 deaths.

After the reoccupation of Poland in 1944, the Soviets targeted members of the Polish resistance. Thousands were arrested, deported, or executed.

Oh and let´s not forget the second Warsaw Uprising – https://www.britannica.com/event/Warsaw-Uprising , where the Russians had the Germans do the dirty work: “As many as 15´000 insurgents and 250´000 civilians were killed”.

After World War II, the NKVD supported the communist regime in Poland to conduct mass arrests and trials of Polish anti-communists and independence activists. Tens of thousands were imprisoned, and thousands were executed or died in custody.

Then there were the border changes and ethnic cleansing, which displaced millions of Poles from eastern territories annexed by the USSR. Many perished during the forced resettlement.

So. Pick your poison. Curious what you make of the above, let me know if its not factual enough. I´d say, all things considered, Poland is a trusted EU Member and a robust NATO ally.

Re “Sovereignty!” – https://www.euronews.com/business/2024/12/09/eu-budget-who-pays-the-most-into-the-eu-and-who-gains-the-most – you will note that Mr. Tusk´s predecessors were happy to claim all kinds of great achievements – with a little help from the European Union…

  8. Norbert, Russia did not threaten Poland. Tusk realizes that impoverished people are easier to control, therefore Tusk is spending money like there is no tomorrow.

    • Wrongn as usual. The general consensus in Poland, either left and right wing, is never to be threatened again by russia. They spend huge amount of money, guest why, cause they have it, their economy is growing unlike the Hungarian one. They do not need to be threatened by russia to know they need to defend themselves, it is something they had to learn in the bad way. What have Hungary learnt from their past? By the way, i am now in poland, and a lot of people and friends here are just not cheering anymore the Hungarian-polish friendship. You van travel and ask them if you want
