Worms in water: Is Hungary’s drinking water as safe as authorities claim?
In Hungary, the quality of drinking water is strictly regulated and continuously monitored. Nearly 100 different parameters are monitored, including the presence of microscopic organisms such as nematodes. Although their presence is sometimes natural, the consumption of drinking water is only restricted if specifically ordered by the authorities. However, if the water quality meets the standards, the health risks are minimal and the water is safe for domestic use.
According to Portfolio, the recent case of worms being found in the drinking water at Pilis has attracted considerable attention, but important clarifications have been made by the organisations concerned, including the National Centre for Public Health. The worms found in drinking water may be naturally present in water sources and are not the same as the pathogenic intestinal worms that cause disease. These microscopic organisms do not pose a direct health risk.
Reasons for the appearance of worms
The presence of worms is due to a number of factors. Faults in the drinking water treatment technology or inadequate disinfection can contribute to their presence, but damage to the network can also play a role. In addition, prolonged stagnation of water at network endpoints, such as infrequently used taps or household water filters, can lead to bacterial colonisation, creating a favourable environment for nematodes. Poorly maintained household water purification systems can also cause contamination. Therefore, regular maintenance and replacement of filters are particularly important.
MaVíz’s position: The tap water in Hungary is excellent
According to Portfolio, the Hungarian Water Utility Association (MaVíz) stressed that the quality of tap water in Hungary is considered excellent at the European level and is one of the most strictly controlled foods. Water utility companies in 3200 municipalities across the country continuously monitor the water network and take immediate action in case of technological problems. Although faults can occur, they work around the clock to quickly rectify problems and ensure a good water supply.
MaVíz stresses that Hungarian drinking water is fully compliant with EU standards. Water utilities carry out risk-based inspections from the point of abstraction to the consumer. This complex system ensures that any problems are detected in time and that immediate action is taken. In addition, water quality is constantly monitored by the authorities. More than 20,000 professionals work in the sector to ensure the supply of drinking water and the treatment of wastewater.
Although the drinking water quality problems in Pilis were a cause for concern, the authorities and service providers reacted quickly and the problem was remedied. The presence of worms may be part of natural processes, and thanks to proper controls, Hungary’s drinking water quality remains excellent. The lesson of this case is that water protection is a shared responsibility, the importance of which should not be underestimated.

I would definitely not drink tap water in Hungary. No matter what the “authorities” say. Old infrastructure and government doesn’t care. They rather spend money on motorways and propaganda. Always boil tap water while cooking.
“..fully compliant with EU standards.”
Oh my, give me a break. Hungarians authorities do not have a clue what EU standards mean.
Stay safe, people, and buy bottled water. And remember to recycle the plastic bottles.
I bet you are the type who wore not one but two face diapers, alone in your own car, during the Chinese cough’n’sneeze scamdemic.
Funnily enough – in lots of restaurants in Budapest, when my foreign guests order “tap water” (for ecological reasons … something about not wanting to drink from glass bottles trucked in from Italy … ) – the waiters will invariably warn them, regarding water quality! Makes me bristle with pride.
Re the “Scamdemic” – https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/hungary?country=~HUN
Hungary, as a percentage, lost more people to COVID than most countries. Including some of my friends, who were far too young … For in depth facts and data, I recommend the following:

During Covid pandemic I wore face mask and sanitazed hands often when in public places because it was scientifically proven, that Covid could lead into a serious infections.
There were some Covid denialists that I knew back them, unfortunaltely some of them got very sick and one elderly denialist even passed away due to Covid infection coplications. The person did pray a lot to stay healthy but somehow that did not save that person.
