Drone strike against Iraqi airport
The Hungarian Ministry of Defence (HM) told the Hungarian News Agency late on Sunday that no Hungarian soldiers were injured in the attack. The Erbil airport’s air defences shot down most of the incoming devices. Footage filmed at the site and published in the Turkish press showed explosions and a huge blaze at the facility.

Iran-backed Iraqi Shia militia Saraya Awliya al-Dam claimed responsibility for the attack, Rudaw Kurdish news channel reported. The group announced it was launching a major operation against US military facilities in Iraq. According to Rudaw, the extremists carried out the strike in retaliation for the death of Iran’s supreme political and religious leader, Ali Khamenei, in American-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.

The militia reportedly deployed drones and “new-type missiles” against the airport, most of which were intercepted by its air defences. Aviation-focused social media site Hava said the explosions occurred in the section of Erbil airport reserved for military use.
