The Edelény Palace Island is set to undergo a series of tourism and cultural upgrades worth nearly €500,000, as part of an action plan supported by the Interreg Hungary–Slovakia Programme, according to a statement issued by the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Council on Monday.
EU backing for Edelény Palace Island revamp
The initiative aims to deliver a comprehensive development of the Gömör tourist destination through cooperation between Hungarian and Slovak partners. Central to the programme is the strengthening of cross-border tourism links, the expansion of experience-led visitor offerings, and the more effective presentation of the region’s cultural, natural and active tourism assets, the Hungarian News Agency wrote.

Officials added that the infrastructure elements of the scheme, titled “Make GMR Great Again”, will be implemented under the so-called #gemer2 project. This rests on three pillars: integrating cultural heritage, natural attractions, and active and cycling tourism.

As part of the programme, Edelény Palace Island will receive close to €500,000 in development funding. The investment will see both the professional and visual content of the palace exhibitions renewed, with interactive and digital features enhancing the visitor experience. A three-dimensional model of the palace and its gardens will be created, alongside animated video content.
Further improvements include the development of a temporary exhibition space, the creation of a themed escape room, and the acquisition of modern IT, audiovisual and exhibition equipment.

A modern, experience-led cultural attraction
According to the statement, the aim is to ensure that Edelény Palace Island remains a competitive, modern and experience-driven cultural attraction over the long term, thereby strengthening the region’s appeal to visitors.
The total budget of the action plan exceeds €3.8 million, of which more than €3 million is provided by the European Union. The programme is scheduled to run until the end of August 2029, with works at Edelény Palace Island expected to be completed by October 2028.
