FBI alert led Hungarian police to student planning school massacre

Hungarian authorities, acting on an FBI tip, prevented a potential school massacre in Vas County by apprehending a student who had expressed violent intentions online. A search of the student’s home uncovered various weapons, though the individual claimed the threats were not serious. This case follows a similar incident in Miskolc, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and vigilant law enforcement in preventing school attacks.

Potential school massacre averted

In a recent incident, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) alerted Hungarian authorities to a potential school massacre being planned by a student in Vas County, police.hu reported. The student had posted on social media expressing intentions to harm peers at their school. Upon receiving this information, the Counter Terrorism Centre (Terrorelhárítási Központ, TEK) apprehended the individual.

A search of the student’s residence revealed various weapons, including throwing stars, daggers, swords, and airsoft rifles. The student admitted to making the post but claimed it was done for attention rather than with genuine intent. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings and notified child protection services.

This event follows a similar case in Miskolc, where a juvenile was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in a reformatory for planning a school shooting, Infostart reported. The individual had discussed intentions to carry out an attack at both their former primary and current secondary schools, seeking information online about acquiring weapons and constructing explosives. The court considered the defendant’s confession and remorse as mitigating factors, while the premeditated nature and potential impact on public safety were seen as aggravating circumstances.

These incidents highlight the critical importance of monitoring online activities and international cooperation in preventing potential school attacks. Timely intervention by law enforcement agencies, both domestic and international, plays a vital role in averting such tragedies and ensuring the safety of educational environments.

  1. I didn’t see a public word of thanks from the Fidesz government to Pressman or the Biden Administration when the FBI saved Hungarians.
