Activist of Hungary’s ruling party Fidesz claim to have been shot at during canvassing

A campaign volunteer collecting signatures for a Fidesz parliamentary candidate claims he was shot at with a gas pistol while canvassing in Szentendre on Saturday.

Fidesz activist was apparently shot at

The incident was first reported by government spokesperson Eszter Vitályos, the spokesperson of the Hungarian government and state secretary responsible for government communication, who is also the ruling party’s candidate in the local constituency. In a video shared on social media, she spoke by phone with the activist, who described the encounter.

According to the Fidesz volunteer, he rang the doorbell at an apartment in a residential building and introduced himself, explaining that he was gathering signatures in support of Vitályos. The resident allegedly asked him to wait a moment. Shortly afterwards, the man leaned out of the window and fired a gas-alarm pistol in his direction, writes Telex. The activist said he immediately ran away and was not injured in the incident.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán urges to stay calm

Vitályos advised the volunteer to file a police report and later linked the alleged attack to what she described as increasing political hostility. She blamed the rhetoric of opposition figures, including Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party, for contributing to tensions. 24.hu reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also commented on the situation, urging people to remain calm and avoid escalation.
