Hungary is a fantastic place with many natural and architectural sights to see. Sometimes it is also advisable to enjoy these spectacles from a scenic view. The best places to do this are obviously the panoramic viewpoints providing an excellent look at the country. Here are the top five ones you should visit at least once!

Gömbkilátó – Balaton

The iconic Gömbkilátó in Balatonboglár (Somogy County) is the main symbol of the region and the town. It stands 60 meters above the ground and awaits everyone who would like to enjoy and see an amazing panoramic view of Lake Balaton and its region. The construction of the viewpoint was started in the 1950s and was finished by the end of the 1960s. In the 1980s, the lookout was closed and was only opened again in 2012.

This is another viewpoint in the region of the Hungarian sea, which is worth visiting. Visiting this lookout tower can be the perfect ending or start of a trip to the lake. It provides the best view of the Tihany-Island and the volcanic mountain ranges of the lake. From the viewpoint, you can see the small houses of Tihany, the building of the Abbey, Balatonfüred and other famous towns. And of course, the blue lake itself.

The Elizabeth Viewpoint is a historic lookout tower on János-mountain above Budapest. Built-in 1911, the tower was named after Empress Elisabeth, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The tower is near Budapest’s District XII and can be reached from the Széll Kálmán tér of Budapest. At 527 meters, János-mountain is the highest point in Budapest. In clear weather, the Mátra Mountains are visible in 80 kilometres distance. On the far eastern horizon, one might see the Great Hungarian Plain.
