BBC relaunches Hungarian-language news after nearly 20 years

The BBC has officially announced plans to relaunch Hungarian-language news programming after nearly two decades, as part of a pilot project modelled on the successful BBC News Polska.

The BBC confirmed to Media1.hu that it is planning to launch Hungarian-language news content on a trial basis. The aim is to provide independent and impartial news to Hungarian-speaking audiences, following the model of the recently launched BBC News Polska.

The BBC World Service currently broadcasts in 43 languages, with all content characterised by editorial independence. While no official start date has been shared, the application deadline for related job postings is August 20, making it likely the service could launch in time for the upcoming election campaign. A BBC spokesperson stated:

The BBC World Service has ambitious plans to bring independent and impartial news to even more people around the world and in more languages. Following the successful launch of BBC News Polska, our Polish-language platform, we’re planning a similar pilot for Hungarian-speaking audiences. Further details will be announced later this year.

Back after a 20-year hiatus

Hungarian-language programming from the BBC may return after nearly 20 years. The previous Hungarian service shut down at the end of 2005, when the British public broadcaster closed several Eastern European language channels. The new initiative is expected to focus on digital platforms, offering online articles, video content, and an active social media presence to engage audiences.
