Hungarian government outraged by anti-Hungarian acts in Romania

Lőrinc Nacsa, the state secretary for policies for Hungarian communities across the borders, on Friday called on the Romanian authorities to take “decisive action” against anti-Hungarian acts.

A few days ago young people in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár) were beaten up for speaking Hungarian, Nacsa said on Facebook (we covered that sorrowful story HERE). “And now football fans in Miercurea Ciuc [Csíkszereda] have torn down and burnt a Szekler flag.”

“Aggression is unacceptable, and we are asking the Romanian authorities to take decisive action against anti-Hungarian acts,” Nacsa said. The government stands by every Hungarian suffering aggression or legal discrimination because of their ethnicity, he added.

UPDATE: FM Szijjártó condemns incidents against ethnic Hungarians in Romania

“We consider incidents against ethnic Hungarians in Romania unacceptable and condemn them in the strongest possible terms”, the foreign minister said on Friday.

Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook after talks with his Romanian counterpart Emil Hurezeanu that two football-related incidents had involved ethnic Hungarians in Romania earlier this week. After a match between two teams from Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvár), Hungarian youth were assaulted in the city’s main square, he said. In Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda) anti-Hungarian slogans were chanted during the entire match played against the guest team from Steaua, Szijjártó added.
