Full programme of Bartók Spring festival finalised

The programme of the Bartók Spring International Arts Weeks has been finalised, and will feature the Arooj Aftab’s jazz trio and a performance of De Sheherezade by Maria Pages among others, organisers said on Tuesday.

The 5th Bartók Spring festival will run between April 4 and May 18 in Budapest, Miskolc, Pécs and Győr, Csaba Kael, the director of the organiser Palace of Arts (MUPA) told a press conference.

Last October, organisers announced that the festival will feature operatic superstars Diana Damrau and Jonas Kaufmann, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Basel Kammerorkester with violinists Barnabas Kelemen and Julia Pusker, respectively, as well as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Star saxophonist Jan Garbarek will perform in Budapest on April 7, in Gyor on April 24 and Pécs on May 18, Janina Szomolanyi, the festival’s operative director, said. Wynton Marsalis will also perform, organisers said.

The folk dance group of the Corvinus University, the Forte theater group and students of the University of Film and Theater Arts will stage an interdisciplinary performance focusing on Bartók’s Microcosmos. Hungarian singer Magdi Rúzsa and pianist János Balázs will perform at MÜPA on April 12, she said.

Other programmes will include film screenings, theatre performances and exhibitions.

Budapest Ritmo, “one of the most important events for world music in the region”, will be held on the sidelines of Bartók Spring between April 10 and 12, Szomolányi said.
