Hungarian prosecutors have brought charges against a 36-year-old German woman accused of killing her young son in the eastern Hungarian town of Karcag, in a case that has shocked the local community.

According to the Jász‑Nagykun‑Szolnok County Prosecutor’s Office, the woman allegedly strangled the child in March last year. Prosecutors are seeking a 15-year prison sentence, the exclusion of parole and the defendant’s expulsion from Hungary for ten years, 24.hu reports.

The case will be decided by the Szolnok Court.

Child reportedly found dead by stepfather

The boy’s body was reportedly discovered by his stepfather, who returned home from work and found the child dead in a chicken coop at the family’s rented property in Karcag.

The family, both German nationals, had moved to Hungary in 2021. They first lived in a rented house in Polány before relocating to Karcag the following year.

Investigators later concluded that the child’s mother was responsible for his death.

Authorities say the child had been neglected

Prosecutors say the boy had been living in Hungary without attending school. He had not completed the first year of primary school in Germany before moving with his mother, and after arriving in Hungary, he was not enrolled in any educational institution.

Authorities say the mother failed to arrange schooling either in Hungary or in Germany despite the child being of compulsory school age.

According to the indictment, the woman frequently left the child alone while visiting bars and drinking, particularly during periods when her partner was working in Austria.

Argument and alcohol before the tragedy

Prosecutors say the woman’s alcohol abuse had worsened in the period leading up to the crime, leaving her in a fragile emotional state.

On the day of the incident, she reportedly drank alcohol throughout the day. After returning to the family home in Karcag, she continued drinking and later had a heated phone argument with her partner.

Authorities say she then decided to kill the child and take her own life. During the evening, she allegedly strangled the boy, wrote a farewell letter and attempted suicide by cutting her wrist.

Her partner returned home from Austria later that night and called an ambulance after finding her injured. The woman survived and was taken to hospital.

Prosecutors seek prison and expulsion

The defendant has reportedly confessed to the crime and expressed remorse. She is currently in custody.

Prosecutors are requesting a 15-year prison sentence, the exclusion of parole, and a ban on working in any profession involving children. They have also asked the court to expel her from Hungary for ten years after serving her sentence.
