Government earmarks EUR 106m for education development in Debrecen

The government has earmarked 35 billion forints (EUR 106m) for supporting a complex education and school infrastructure development programme in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, according to the decree published in the official gazette Magyar Közlöny on Friday.

The programme aims to help provide well-trained workforce to meet investors’ labour needs in the region, the innovation and technology ministry said in a statement.

It includes setting up an automotive laboratory and a technical faculty wing at the Debrecen University, and launching technician training in local vocational education next September.

The programme also includes building a German-language primary and secondary school, the ministry said.

It will also facilitate dual education in local schools under an upgraded curriculum.

German carmaker BMW will start building a new-generation plant in Debrecen next spring. The government has already launched a 130 billion forint local infrastructure development programme aimed at turning the region into an international business, education and innovation hub, the ministry said.
