Government yet to decide how to use funds originally aimed at financing Olympic plans
Budapest (MTI) – The government has not yet decided how to use the funds that had been allocated to finance Budapest’s bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, Bence Tuzson, state secretary in charge of government communications, said at a press conference held on a different subject on Saturday.
János Lázár, the government office chief, told a local forum on Friday that “Budapest did not want 1,000 billion forints (EUR 3.2bn) in development funds for the Olympics” and suggested that those funds could be used for rural development projects.
Tuzson insisted that “nobody has hard feelings” on Budapest and the government would not seek to “punish” the capital city for withdrawing the Olympic bid. He added that necessary development projects must be implemented even if no Olympics are hosted in Budapest.
