Heavy snow causes power cuts in Hungary
Some nine thousand consumers in three counties of eastern Hungary were still without electricity on Monday morning after heavy snowing around the country over the weekend, the national disaster management authority said.
As we wrote yesterday, the national weather service issued a snow alert for most of Hungary on Saturday and Sunday, and additional warnings have been put out in several counties due to rain and freezing rain. Read more HERE.
Power disruptions continued in Békés, Hajdú-Bihar, and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties, the authority said.
Poor weather conditions also caused delays in train services around Hungary, with delays reported from forty-eight lines, it added.
The disaster management authority has been alerted 430 times since Saturday and further snow is forecast by the weather service.
Fire services were alerted to remove trees and branches fallen under the weight of the snow and rescue vehicles that had slipped off icy roads.
