Here’s why Orbán did not veto EU sanctions against Russia: a phone call from Washington

Every six months, the EU renews its sanctions against more than 2,400 individuals and entities, mostly from Russia. This presents an excellent opportunity for the Hungarian government, which frequently uses the veto as a political weapon, to extract concessions from the European Commission. This time, they sought to remove oligarchs from Putin’s inner circle from the list, but a phone call from Washington led to the veto being lifted.
Why it is so important for Viktor Orbán to remove these individuals close to Putin has not been explained, but it reinforces the theories of those who, for years, have seen Moscow’s influence in the Hungarian government’s actions. At the same time, the Trump administration has stirred the pot somewhat, as it is currently supporting EU sanctions. According to Politico, the Hungarian government decided to lift the veto under US pressure. The publication, citing two unnamed diplomatic sources, reports that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and urged him not to block EU sanctions against Russia.
This would explain why the Hungarian government lifted its veto on Friday, less than 48 hours before the measures were due to expire.
Details HERE: Hungary would only vote to extend the EU sanctions list if a Russian oligarch were removed from it. A community of 450 million people would have been unable to enforce its decision due to a veto from a country of fewer than 10 million, which was already causing extreme tension in EU diplomatic circles.
Szabad Európa has reported that Russian businessman Vyacheslav Moshe Kantor, Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev, businessman Vladimir Rashevsky, and Gulbahor Ismaylyova, brother of Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, will reportedly be removed from the sanctions list. The article added that the Hungarian government had initially requested the removal of eight individuals from the list, including Russian businessmen Dmitry Mazepin, Mikhail Fridman, Pyotr Aven, Musa Bazhaev, and Usmanov. However, the 27 EU countries ultimately agreed that only a few names would be removed.
Sanctions must be extended every six months with the agreement of all member states, and new pro-Russian demands will likely be made of the EU in exchange for Hungary’s vote.
ah yes, the true hypocrisy… hungarian government being influenced and told what to do by the orange idiot, while the fidesz fascists are going against their opposition because “they are under orders from the global left”
