Historic high: Record number apply to study at Hungarian universities – Are you one of them?

All previous records have been broken — never before have so many people applied to Hungarian unversities when counting both the general and supplementary admission procedures together, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM) announced in a statement on Sunday via MTI.

According to the statement, 16,500 people submitted their applications during the supplementary admission procedure to Hungarian universities and colleges.

This year, applications for supplementary admission could be submitted to 44 universities and colleges; applicants could apply for one course at one institution. Among the most popular fields of study were medicine, IT, engineering, economics, and teacher training.

“It is particularly pleasing that 57 percent of applicants chose a field of study that is important from a national economic and labour market perspective. These include, among others, IT, engineering, agriculture, medical and health sciences, natural sciences, and teacher training.

We have built a competitive, attractive, identity-preserving, and community-building higher education system, and the results of the supplementary admissions have once again proven this,” the statement quoted Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary for Higher Education, Vocational and Adult Education, and Youth Affairs.

Thirty-five percent of those applying for supplementary admission chose a state-funded programme. Three-quarters of applicants aim to enter a bachelor’s programme, while 15 percent applied for a master’s programme. The proportion of applicants choosing church-run institutions also continued to grow during the supplementary admission round: 19 percent applied to church-run universities or colleges.

Sixty-five percent of applicants chose one of the restructured institutions, while 9 percent applied to a state university. Admission scores are expected to be announced on 27 August, and those admitted in the supplementary round will be able to start their studies in September in their chosen field, the statement added.
