Programme guide: One of the greatest battles of the 1849 freedom fight to be reenacted in Isaszeg on 6 April – photos

Change language:

If you have ever yearned to witness a genuine battle at close quarters, 6 April 2026, a Monday, is your day. The climax of the XXXVII Spring Commemorative Campaign, part of the Isaszeg Historical Days, will once again unfold at the foot of Szoborhegy, where, on 6 April 1849, the Hungarian honvéd army secured a resounding victory over the imperial forces in the Battle of Isaszeg. There, in 2026, the guns will fire anew.

What happened in the Battle of Isaszeg on 6 April 1849?

The Battle of Isaszeg marked the opening clash of the Hungarian War of Independence’s spring campaign, and one of Hungary’s greatest triumphs. Under the command of Artur Görgei, the Hungarian honvéd army’s four corps cornered Prince Windisch-Grätz’s imperial forces between Isaszeg and Gödöllő. The terrain offered the Hungarians no favours (dense forests and steep hillsides fractured the battlefield), yet the honvéds ultimately drove back the Austrians, forcing them to begin their retreat from central Hungary.

The victory carried profound consequences: it paved the way for the recapture of Pest-Buda and Komárom; Windisch-Grätz lost his position as commander-in-chief; and within weeks, the Hungarian parliament issued its throne-depriving Declaration of Independence, ousting the Habsburgs. The Battle of Isaszeg was thus more than a mere engagement; it sealed the fate of the Hungarian struggle, if only briefly.

To bring this alive beyond the pages of books, reenactors have gathered in their hundreds at Isaszeg for over three decades each year, donning authentic uniforms, wielding period weapons and mounting horses to revive the battle’s memory.
