Using an eSIM in Hungary can be one of the simplest ways to stay online during a holiday, business trip or longer stay. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, travellers can download a mobile plan directly to a compatible smartphone, often before arriving in the country.
However, activation methods, validity periods and roaming settings vary between providers. Before purchasing a plan, it is therefore worth checking whether your phone supports eSIM technology, whether it is unlocked and exactly when the selected package becomes active.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital version of a traditional SIM card. It is built into the device and allows users to install a mobile subscription by scanning a QR code, opening an activation link or using a network provider’s application.
Hungarian mobile networks offer eSIM services, while international travel eSIM companies also sell packages that operate in Hungary. Local plans may include a Hungarian telephone number, calls and text messages, whereas many travel eSIMs provide mobile data only.
Visitors should decide whether they only need internet access for navigation and messaging apps or also require a Hungarian number for calls, bookings and local administration.
Do EU travellers need an eSIM in Hungary?
Travellers arriving from another European Union or European Economic Area country may already be able to use their existing mobile plan in Hungary without additional roaming charges.
Under the EU’s “Roam Like at Home” rules, customers can generally use calls, text messages and mobile data at domestic rates during temporary visits to Hungary. Fair-use limits and individual provider conditions may still apply. The system does not automatically cover visitors from the United Kingdom or countries outside the EU and EEA, so these travellers should check their operator’s roaming charges before departure.
Even EU travellers may prefer an eSIM in Hungary if their domestic plan has a limited roaming allowance or they need additional data.
How to activate an eSIM in Hungary
The first step is to choose a package and confirm that it is compatible with the device. Travellers should compare the data allowance, coverage, validity period, hotspot availability and whether the plan includes calls or a local number.
After purchasing the package, the provider will normally send a QR code, activation link or manual installation details. Connect the phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network before beginning the installation.
Activating an eSIM on an iPhone
On most compatible iPhones, open Settings, select Mobile Service or Mobile Data, and tap Add eSIM. Choose the QR-code option and scan the code supplied by the provider. Some providers also allow activation through a direct link or application.
Apple advises users to follow the on-screen instructions and enter any confirmation code supplied by the network operator.
Activating an eSIM on an Android phone
Menu names differ between manufacturers.
On Google Pixel devices, the usual path is Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Add SIM, and then Set up an eSIM.
On compatible Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings, select Connections, then SIM manager and Add eSIM. The plan can normally be installed by scanning the provider’s QR code or entering an activation code manually.
Check the mobile data settings
Once installation is complete, give the new plan a clear label, such as “Hungary” or “Travel data”. Select it as the preferred line for mobile data.
Some international eSIM providers require data roaming to be enabled for their plan. This does not necessarily mean additional charges will apply, but travellers should follow the provider’s instructions carefully.
To avoid unexpected costs, disable mobile data roaming on the primary SIM and turn off automatic mobile data switching. The original SIM can usually remain active for calls and verification messages while the Hungarian or travel eSIM handles internet traffic.
What to do if the eSIM does not work
If the phone does not display an Add eSIM option, the model may not support the technology or may be locked to another operator. Compatibility can also vary by the country in which the device was purchased.
When installation succeeds but mobile data remains unavailable, try switching aeroplane mode on and off, restarting the phone and checking that the correct SIM has been selected for data. Manual network selection or APN settings may occasionally be required.
Do not delete the eSIM profile unless instructed to do so. Some QR codes can only be used once, meaning a replacement activation code may be needed. Apple also recommends checking for network-provider setting updates and contacting the provider if activation continues to fail.
A convenient option for visiting Hungary
An eSIM in Hungary can provide internet access without searching for a shop, replacing a tiny plastic card or removing a traveller’s main SIM. Installation often takes only a few minutes, but the plan’s activation rules should always be checked in advance.
Setting up the eSIM before departure, while connected to stable Wi-Fi, can make arrival considerably easier. Once in Hungary, travellers should only need to select the new data line and confirm that it has connected to a local mobile network.
