Hungarian awarded at National Geographic photo contest 2013
Budapest, December 20 (MTI) – Hungarian nature photographer Reka Zsirmon has won an Honorable Mention in the nature category at the National Geographic Photo Contest 2013 for her image entitled Flying Egrets.
Her website www.kudich.hu said in a statement sent to MTI that the photo was made in the bed of a drying lake that had been temporarily filled by the flooding Danube.
“During these days, the birds that otherwise live in smaller flocks, gathered here in great numbers. It was a unique experience to watch them from such a close vicinity. The lake provided abundant food for all the egrets. They were only disturbed from time to time by the white-tailed eagles circling above,” the statement said.
The main prize went to Paul Souders’ image Ice Bear at the awards ceremony in Washington on Thursday.
National Geographic, which was founded 125 years ago, invited photos at the contest in three categories: people, places and nature. A total of over 7,000 images were submitted from over 150 countries for the prestigious contest.
