Hungarian county tops the region in both the number and quality of thermal wells and spas

When it comes to thermal waters, Hungary enjoys well-deserved global recognition, with few European countries able to boast as many medicinal and thermal springs. In Western Hungary, there is a clear frontrunner: Vas County, which surpasses all other regions in the number and quality of thermal wells.
19 thermal wells – an unrivalled advantage
According to official records, Vas County is home to a total of 19 wells designated as medicinal water sources. This places the county ahead of Zala, which is also rich in medicinal springs but currently has only 18 listed. Previously, both counties had the same number of certified wells, but Vas has since taken the lead.
Sárvár boasts the highest number of medicinal wells, with eight located within the town. Several of these form the backbone of the area’s health tourism. The other major hub is Bük/Bükfürdő, where six wells have been documented. Szombathely has two, while Celldömölk, Mesteri and Szeleste each have one available to residents and visitors alike.
- Did you hear? One of Budapest’s most visited thermal baths will close for years from October.
- Meanwhile, good news: the indoor section of a popular Budapest spa has reopened.

Sárvár – 8 wells
Bük/Bükfürdő – 6 wells
Szombathely – 2 wells
Celldömölk, Mesteri, Szeleste – 1 well each

Not all thermal waters receive official medicinal status
Interestingly, several towns in Vas County have excellent-quality thermal water yet do not hold an official medicinal designation. One such example is Borgáta, where locals are well aware of the water’s beneficial effects, though it has not been officially certified.
Sárvár also features the historic Rábasömjén well. This source once provided the water used to produce the renowned Sárvári Thermal Crystal. Although no longer in use, it remains a reminder that the region’s healing waters have a heritage spanning decades.
Sárvár: one of Europe’s most remarkable medicinal spas
Among Hungary’s globally renowned healing waters, the Sárvár Spa and Wellness Centre, located in Western Hungary, stands out. It offers visitors healing, relaxation and a complete recreational experience. With two unique medicinal water sources, a rich historical background and state-of-the-art amenities, Sárvár has become one of the most distinguished spa destinations on the continent.

Two types of medicinal water, unique benefits
Sárvár’s greatest asset lies in its two natural springs. One produces water at 43°C, ideal for alleviating musculoskeletal and rheumatic complaints. The second source is markedly hotter at 83°C and was once used to produce the Sárvári Thermal Crystal mentioned earlier. This compound was administered medicinally to treat digestive issues and was considered rare in Hungary at the time.
Among the international elite
The spa has gained international recognition, becoming a member of the Royal Spas of Europe association, which includes only the finest spa destinations on the continent. This prestigious status confirms that the Sárvár complex is of exceptional quality by European standards.

Hundreds of thousands visitors annually
Sárvár Spa welcomes hundreds of thousands of guests each year. In addition to Hungarians, a large number of visitors arrive from abroad, especially from Austria and Germany. Over the past decades, a robust hotel and wellness infrastructure has been built around the spa, earning Sárvár the title of the wellness capital of Western Hungary.
An experience for the whole family
The facility offers more than just medical therapies. The adventure pool area features giant slides, a wave pool, a children’s zone, and a modern sauna park. As a result, it appeals not only to those seeking treatment but also to families and younger generations.
Culture and history alongside healing waters
Sárvár’s unique atmosphere is enhanced by the spa’s surrounding park and the nearby Nádasdy Castle, which enriches visitors’ experiences with cultural events, exhibitions and historical attractions.

Medicinal spas: tourism and economic impact
Medicinal waters represent not only health benefits but also a significant economic asset. Sárvár and Bükfürdő have become internationally recognised spa towns, drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists annually, including large numbers of foreign visitors. Spa-based tourism creates jobs, strengthens local services and generates substantial revenue for local communities.
From a medical perspective, the waters are particularly valuable: they are effective in treating musculoskeletal conditions, joint problems and rheumatism, while some sources are even beneficial as drinking cures.
The future of Vas County: health tourism
Experts predict that the importance of health tourism will continue to grow in the coming years, as more people seek natural, well-being-focused alternatives. This presents an excellent opportunity for Vas County to strengthen its international presence further. The combination of modern spas, traditional medicinal water use and natural surroundings could provide a major competitive edge in the region.
