The Hungarian forint strengthened on Friday against all three major foreign currencies, recovering from recent losses and ending the week on a firmer footing. While the domestic currency remains weaker than it was at the start of June, it has posted solid gains since the beginning of the year.

Forint rebounds after recent pressure

The Hungarian forint started Friday on a positive note in the interbank foreign exchange market, reversing some of the weakness seen earlier in the week.

During Thursday’s trading, the euro briefly climbed close to HUF 365, raising concerns that the forint’s recent decline could continue. However, sentiment improved overnight, allowing the Hungarian currency to recover.

By 9 AM on Friday, the euro had fallen to HUF 363.10 from HUF 364.58 on Thursday evening. The US dollar slipped from HUF 320.50 to HUF 318.65, while the Swiss franc eased from HUF 392.24 to HUF 390.54, writes Tőzsdefórum.

Stronger finish by the afternoon

The forint continued to strengthen throughout the day. By 6 PM, one euro was trading at HUF 362.19, compared with HUF 364.12 early in the morning. The US dollar fell from HUF 320.04 to HUF 318.12, while the Swiss franc declined from HUF 391.48 to HUF 389.55.

Market data also showed an even stronger late-afternoon performance, with the euro briefly trading around HUF 361.05, the dollar at HUF 317.55, and the Swiss franc at HUF 388.16. Overall, the forint gained around 0.5% against both the euro and the Swiss franc during the day, while strengthening 0.6% against the US dollar.

Still below June levels, but ahead for the year

Despite Friday’s recovery, the Hungarian currency remains weaker than it was at the beginning of June. Compared with the start of the month, the forint is still down by 1.7% against the euro, 1.8% against the US dollar and 0.9% against the Swiss franc.

The broader picture for 2025, however, remains considerably more positive. Since the beginning of the year, the forint has appreciated by:

  • 5.8% against the euro,
  • 2.8% against the US dollar,
  • 5.7% against the Swiss franc.

Key economic data could drive next moves

Friday’s trading session was expected to remain sensitive to fresh macroeconomic data. Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) was due to release employment figures, while the afternoon brought purchasing managers’ index (PMI) data from both the eurozone and the United States.

These indicators are closely watched by investors and could influence currency markets in the short term. And although the forint has regained some lost ground, analysts will be watching whether the latest rebound marks the beginning of a more sustained recovery or merely a temporary correction.
