Hungarian government wants telecom service providers to stop raising prices

Telecommunications service fees are unacceptably high, therefore, the government expects service providers to restrict prices, National Economy Minister Márton Nagy said in a video message posted on Facebook on Friday.
Internet, television and mobile phone service fees rose by close to 16pc in the first two months of the year, the minister said. That is quite steep, he added. The service providers are set to increase prices further from April, which is unacceptable, Nagy said.
The government wants to see a voluntary price limitation, so that prices do not rise further. “We believe these telecommunications prices are high even in international comparison. [Service providers] have one week to come back – that is Monday-Tuesday – to make commitments to us,” the minister said.

When asked whether a decision could be made in April to reduce prices, Nagy said the government would decide whether the commitments made by market players were acceptable or whether it would resort to market regulation.
