Hungarian Justice Minister: families in focus of consumer protection policy

Representing the interests of the Hungarian people and families will be a key responsibility of consumer protection over the next four years, Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Facebook on Tuesday.

The justice ministry will have an important role to play in this as the entity in charge of consumer protection, Varga said. The minister said she had given a talk on the new directions in consumer protection policy at a conference of government commissioners.

Consumer protection policy will rest on four pillars over the next government cycle, Varga said. Firstly, consumer protection will have to become more user-friendly and easily accessible to everyone, she said.

Consumer protection must provide answers to the issues raised by “the digital world” and “the dark side of technological development” must be addressed with the right legal solutions, the minister said. Hungarians must also be protected online, she added.

Consumer protection must also enforce the guarantees enshrined in the constitution, Varga said. She said a Consumer Protection Roundtable will be set up to establish uniform legal practices for the organisations working in the field of consumer protection.
