Hungarian foreign minister: Stability in Lebanon key for peace in Middle East

Stability in Lebanon is crucial for achieving peace in the Middle East, the minister of foreign affairs and trade said on Tuesday, adding that “Lebanese now have a fair chance to regain their right to a peaceful life for the long run.

“This requires an extension of the ceasefire agreement, Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook, adding that Hungary “firmly supports” such an extension. He pointed to the importance of the presence of United Nations peacekeeping forces and added that Hungary contributed 16 troops to that mission. Szijjártó also called for reinforcing the Lebanese military and said that Hungary had made an extra payment through the European Peace Facility.

The minister said the Hungary Helps Programme contributed to seven development schemes in 2025 aimed to reinforce Christian communities in other countries. He said he was scheduled to talk in Beirut about Hungary’s contribution to stability in the Middle East and bilateral ties with Lebanon later in the day.
