Hungarian police officers indicted for severely abusing a man
Seven police officers have been indicted for committing collective violence and other crimes in the course of the formal proceedings in June.
According to the announcement of the Central Chief Prosecution Office of Investigation, the police took action against a man for vandalism in the evening of 3 June in Budapest. The man refused to cooperate and attacked the officers, so he was taken to the district police station.
The indictment claims that the police abused the man several times already at the time of the arrest and then later at the police station.
The victim suffered multiple rib fractures, numerous bruises on his upper body, and a collapsed lung, which caused a life-threatening condition,
writes Infostart. The first abuse occurred at the time of the arrest. He approached one of the police officers who first pushed the man away from him, then grabbed his neck and didn’t let it go for several seconds.
The man resisted, threw away his car key and kicked a chair towards one of the police officers, who then punched him in the head.
The policeman who had previously grabbed the man’s neck also pushed him onto a chair at the police station and punched him in the stomach. Later,
another police officer exposed the victim to pepper spray in the room where he was kept,
explains Telex. An hour later, three policemen entered the room and kicked and punched the man multiple times who consequently suffered multiple rib fractures, numerous bruises on his upper body, and a collapsed lung.
There were several police officers who were not involved in the crime, however, they didn’t report the incident nor did they intervene while the other officers were abusing the man. According to the prosecution office, one of the police officers “assisted” the perpetrators with his supportive presence, thus they all committed a crime, which is punishable by up to 12 years prison sentence.
The service of the three police officers involved in the case was immediately terminated and they have been under arrest for four months.
