Hungarian police unit leaves for North Macedonia

A new group of 30 Hungarian police officers has set out for North Macedonia to help local authorities with border control tasks, the national police force (ORFK) said on its website on Monday.

The Hungarian police are “committed to preventing illegal migrants from entering Hungary and the European Union,” the website said.

The Hungarian officers will patrol North Macedonia’s borders and areas inside the country to prevent illegal entry and apprehend possible entrants as well as human smugglers, the website said, adding that the unit will be under local command.

The website also said that police officers returning from North Macedonia and Serbia will, similarly to private individuals returning from those countries, stay in isolation until testing negative for Covid-19.
