Hungarian policeman committed multiple bank robberies sometimes dressed as a woman
Who would have guessed that someone who is fighting against crime becomes a criminal? Igor K. used to serve as a Hungarian policeman, but due to financial troubles, he started living a double life as a criminal. Even his family was clueless about the robberies he had committed. He disguised himself in various ways, even dressed up as a woman.
Robberies in two cities
According to Blikk‘s information, investigators have identified a professional police officer as the perpetrator behind multiple bank robberies in Hungary, including two in Pécs and one in Budapest. The suspect, who has been in custody for over two years, is awaiting trial. The Hungarian policeman’s career began as a district officer in Szigetvár, followed by a position in the Economic Protection Department of the Pécs Police Department. At the time of his arrest, he was an ensign. The Hungarian policeman resided in a two-storey suburban house with his partner and three children. The indictment from the Kaposvár Regional Investigating Prosecutor’s Office features the following:
He was in serious financial difficulties, and decided to try to remedy his financial difficulties by robbing financial institutions.
The Hungarian policeman’s first crime
The first bank robbery occurred on 19 November, 2019, on Komlói Road, where a limping man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a mouth mask entered the bank and placed a note on the customer service desk demanding money and claiming he had a gun. On 12 May, 2020, the same individual returned to the same bank, this time wearing a medical mask and displaying what appeared to be a weapon.
Finding the man
The police released a sketch of the suspect and offered a one million forint reward for information. In the first robbery, the thief obtained HUF 1,852,000 (EUR 4,651), while in the second, he stole HUF 5,736,000 (EUR 14,407). Meanwhile, a bizarre bank robbery occurred in Budapest, where a man dressed as a woman, wearing a skirt and straw hat, and carrying a red bag, robbed a bank in the 15th district and escaped by bus. Eventually, it was revealed that Igor K. was responsible for the Pécs robberies and was also charged with the Budapest heist.
The spokesperson of the Kaposvár District Court said: “On 9 August, 2021, he entered a financial institution in Budapest, also disguised in a medical mask, and again handed a threatening message written on a piece of paper to bank employees, while pointing an object that looked like a weapon at them. Here the employees handed over 3,419,000 forints to the accused. He locked the bank employees in an office, damaged the security system and then fled”.
His sentence
It was revealed that on 24 November, 2020, the Hungarian policeman, Igor K., unauthorised by his official duties, accessed documents related to the second robbery in the system, leaving a trace. The prosecutor’s office charged him with three counts of robbery, violation of personal liberty and abuse of office. If he confesses, he could face a 12-year prison sentence, a 10-year ban from public office and the confiscation of over HUF 11 million (EUR 27,629) in assets.
