“Death”: Hungarian prisoner of war returns from Russia, sends message to Zelensky

A former prisoner of war recently returned to Hungary from Russia has made a stark statement about the Ukrainian president during a public event in Debrecen.

Two men with Hungarian citizenship left Russia, one of them sent a message to president Zelensky

The man, one of two soldiers brought back to Hungary this week, attended a meeting of the pro-peace DPK group on Saturday. When asked by a reporter what message he would send to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the former POW reportedly replied simply: “Death.” The remark quickly started spreading online and just added fuel to the fire regarding the already tense political atmosphere surrounding the circumstances of the soldiers’ return.

FM Szijjártó negotiated in Moscow

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó travelled to Moscow earlier in the week, where he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Following the discussions, the two prisoners of war — both reportedly holding Hungarian citizenship — were allowed to leave Russia and travel to Hungary, as reported by Telex.

According to Szijjártó, Russia did not request anything in return for their release. He said Hungarian authorities became involved after one of the prisoners sent a video message addressed to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, while the other soldier’s mother contacted the government seeking help. The former POW told reporters that he only learned about his imminent release a day before returning home and that his family helped him endure captivity.

Ukraine raises concerns

The transfer has triggered a diplomatic dispute. Ukraine’s foreign ministry summoned Hungary’s chargé d’affaires in Kyiv, requesting reliable information about the prisoners handed over by Russia. Zelensky’s officials criticised the way the release was handled, calling it cynical political messaging. They argued that genuine humanitarian efforts to free prisoners should not be accompanied by publicity or political statements, while Hungarian officials have defended their actions, insisting the priority was to bring the men home safely.

  1. Oh now he is a Hungarian citizen.
Previously he was a Ukrainian citizen, who was supposed to be sent back to Ukraine to send him to the front again to die.

  2. where is rusophobic Larry the clown. Maybe he was manhunted already by Zelensky’s gestapo and he is already in the battle front where he should be proud to be in.

  3. I wonder why they did not ask what message he would want to send to Putin, who started the war and forced Ukraine to conscript men to defend against the Russian brutal attack… oh yeah, it was a Fidesz event supporting Russians.
