Hungarians gather in Transylvania to celebrate culture, unity ahead of National Cohesion Day

One of the key tasks of public media is to preserve the intellectual heritage of ethnic Hungarian communities beyond the borders, present its cultural and historic values and let other fellow Hungarians around the world learn about those, the head of Hungarian public media company Duna Médiaszolgáltató said in Rimateas (Torockó) in central Romania’s Transylvania on Saturday.

Opening the 11th three-day Danube Days annual cultural event, Anita Altorjai said “we are pleased to fulfill this particularly important mission”. “Marking the upcoming National Cohesion Day, music, dance, the arts, games and faith will be the common language for us to greet one another,” she said in the main square of the settlement that has a large Hungarian community.

She highlighted among the numerous programmes an exhibition of photos by Péter Korniss about the “dance house movement” that began in the 1970s which she said was also to pay tribute to renowned Hungarian choreographer Ferenc “Tata” Novák, who died last year.

Altorjai noted that nearly five hundred artists, musicians, singers, dancers and many thousands of guests arrived in Torockó to celebrate their Hungarianness, traditions and cultural treasures together as the Day of National Cohesion was approaching. The Day of National Cohesion was declared by Hungarian lawmakers in 2010.
