Hungary extends ban on Ukrainian farm products: here’s why

Hungary will maintain its ban on farm products from Ukraine, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Hungary will keep the ban in place to protect local farmers and local markets, while subjecting transit deliveries to strict controls, the ministry said after a meeting between Agriculture Minister István Nagy and Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka in Budapest.
Nagy warned in the statement that a pact between Brussels and Kyiv could cause Ukraine’s farm exports to climb by a factor of 4-5, taking the markets of Hungarian farmers who had to comply with strict European Union animal and plant health rules.
The sides discussed the impact of drought and climate change in Hungary and Ukraine, Nagy said. He added that Hungarian farmers had harvested 5.4m tonnes of wheat this season.
