Hungary bans travels to Ukraine, helps foreigners get out

“Travel to Ukraine is not recommended under any circumstances,” the Hungarian foreign ministry said on the website of its consular service on Thursday.

The ministry has asked Hungarian nationals staying in Ukraine to register for consular protection. All Hungarian representations in Ukraine are at the disposal of Hungarians contacting them personally or by phone, the ministry said.

Telephone numbers of the Hungarian embassy and consulate in Kyiv, the chief consulate in Uzhhorod (Ungvár), as well as the consular office in Berehove (Beregszász) are listed at https://konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu/ukrajnara-vonatkozo-utazasi-tanacsok220224.

Furthermore, Hungary’s foreign minister said late on Thursday that India and Iran had turned to Hungary for help in rescuing their citizens stranded in Ukraine. PĂ©ter SzijjártĂł wrote on Facebook that he had spoken by phone to the foreign ministers of India and Iran concerning their request that Hungary open a humanitarian corridor to the nearest airport for their citizens who reach the Ukrainian-Hungarian border.

“Of course, we will help everyone get home safely,”

he said. The minister told his counterparts that leaving Kyiv by road was extremely difficult, adding, however, that they could count on Hungary’s help.
