One of Hungary’s most picturesque open-air bathing spots has reopened for the 2026 season, drawing visitors back to the tranquil surroundings of Fényes Bath in Tata.
Following extensive seasonal preparations, the popular Grófi Lake and its adjacent campsite began welcoming guests over the May Day long weekend. With green spaces refreshed, facilities fully maintained and safety checks completed, the site is once again ready to receive holidaymakers seeking a nature-based retreat, according to KEMMA’s report.
Operated by Tatai Városkapu Közhasznú Zrt., the complex is a flagship destination for both locals and tourists looking to combine relaxation with outdoor activities.
Naturally heated waters and outdoor activities
At the heart of the complex lies the Grófi Lake, a spring-fed bathing lake that has grown in popularity year after year. Its naturally sourced waters and peaceful environment offer a unique alternative to conventional pools.
Water quality continues to meet strict regulatory standards, with regular official testing ensuring safe conditions throughout the season. Beyond swimming, the area caters to fans of beach sports and open-air recreation, making it an ideal destination for families and active visitors alike.

A unique natural treasure with remarkable features
The Grófi Lake is not just visually striking; it also stands out for its exceptional natural characteristics. Known as one of Central Europe’s highest-yielding warm spring lakes, it maintains a constant temperature of around 20–22°C all year round.
Its crystal-clear water offers visibility exceeding five metres, attracting divers eager to explore the bubbling underwater springs. The surrounding area is also ecologically significant: protected since 1977 and listed under the Ramsar Convention since 1989, it supports a rich ecosystem.
Birdwatchers are particularly drawn to the nearby Fényes Nature Trail, where tens of thousands of migratory birds pass through during peak seasons.

“Vanlife” trend boosts campsite popularity
The adjacent Fényes Camping has also reopened, offering pitches for tents and caravans with access to electricity, shared kitchens and designated fire pits.
Demand is already strong, reflecting the growing appeal of minimalist, nature-oriented travel. The so-called “vanlife” lifestyle, focused on freedom, simplicity and mobility, has played a significant role in boosting interest in this type of accommodation.
More to come: classic beach season starts in June
While the lake and campsite are already in full operation, visitors seeking a more traditional beach experience will need to wait a little longer. Additional pools at the complex are scheduled to open in mid-June, coinciding with the start of the summer school holidays.
Until then, the natural beauty and calm atmosphere of the spring-fed lake offer a compelling early-season getaway.

A destination rich in history and heritage
Beyond its natural appeal, the area surrounding the lake is steeped in history. The name “Grófi Lake” references the noble Esterházy family, whose estates once shaped the region. Nearby landmarks such as Tata Castle and the Esterházy Palace further enhance the cultural value of the destination, KEMMA writes.
The lake itself also tells a story of environmental recovery: after local mining activities caused the springs to dry up in the 1970s, the waters gradually returned following the end of extraction, restoring the area’s natural balance.
