Hungary among the top budget-friendly travel destinations

Looking for a holiday that won’t break the bank? Budget-friendly travel is more popular than ever, with many travellers seeking destinations that offer incredible experiences at affordable prices. A recent study has revealed the best value-for-money destinations worldwide, highlighting both long-haul and European options for cost-conscious explorers. While Indonesia and Vietnam top the list for ultra-low costs, Hungary stands out as a prime choice for those wanting an affordable yet culturally rich getaway closer to home.
The top budget-friendly travel destinations
A recent study by GD Consulting analysed where Austrian travellers can get the most for their money, considering exchange rates, cost of living, and meal prices. The research, conducted by an online travel provider, found that Indonesia tops the list for budget-friendly travel, with meals starting from just EUR 1.78 and living costs up to 60 per cent lower than in Austria. Visitors can explore Bali’s stunning beaches, the ancient Borobudur temple, and Jakarta’s vibrant markets without exceeding their budget.
Vietnam secured second place, offering meals from EUR 1.92 and a highly favourable exchange rate, making its street food culture, Hoi An’s lantern-lit charm, and Ha Long Bay’s breathtaking limestone cliffs accessible to budget-conscious travellers. Tunisia, ranking third, provides an affordable Mediterranean escape, with meals from EUR 3.03 and significantly lower living costs. Tourists can enjoy Hammamet’s sandy shores, the historic ruins of Carthage, and the bustling Medina of Tunis without overspending, reinforcing the appeal of these destinations for budget-friendly travel.
The best value-for-money options in Europe
Hungary has been recognised as one of Europe’s top budget-friendly travel destinations, ranking 13th in a recent study analysing cost-effective holiday spots. While far-off destinations like Indonesia and Vietnam offer incredibly low living costs, Hungary provides excellent value closer to home for European travellers. With affordable dining options, lower overall expenses compared to Austria, and a rich cultural heritage, Hungary continues to attract those seeking quality experiences without overspending. Budapest, the capital, is a prime example, offering stunning architecture, vibrant ruin bars, and world-famous thermal baths at reasonable prices.

Hungary has a lot to offer
Beyond Budapest, Hungary boasts a variety of attractions that make it an appealing choice for budget-friendly travel. Lake Balaton, known as the “Hungarian Sea,” offers picturesque beaches and affordable summer retreats, while the historic town of Eger is famous for its baroque charm and local wines. Travellers can also explore the Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO-listed site showcasing Hungary’s rural traditions. With its mix of history, nature, and affordability, Hungary remains a top choice for those looking to maximise their travel budget without sacrificing memorable experiences.
