Hungary stands by commitment to GMO-free food, farm minister says at German expo
Berlin (MTI) – Hungary is committed to food free of genetically modified organisms (GMO), Fazekas Sandor, the farm minister, said in Berlin on Saturday, where he attended the green expo Grune Woche.
Hungary started an initiative 18 months ago to make Europe GMO-free, he told public news channel M1. The programme has been joined by 11 EU countries and six states from outside the EU, he added.
Hungary’s top products for Europe and the global market are bio and premium products, wines and palinka (brandy). Germans like and appreciate Hungarian cuisine and Hungary exports the most food to that country, Fazekas said. He added that Hungarians living in rural areas must be given jobs and policies are needed which support the processing industry and the manufacturing of ready-made products. Investments in the agriculture sector over the past few years prove that the food industry is starting to exit the crisis, he said, adding that the Hungarian state had supported the sector with several hundreds of billions of forints.
