Hungary, Turkey to hold strategic talks in spring, says Hungarian foreign minister

Brussels, December 7 (MTI) – The prime ministers of Hungary and Turkey will hold high-level strategic talks in Ankara next spring, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told MTI on Wednesday.

Szijjártó met his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO foreign minister in Brussels. The talks will target removing mutual restrictions on VAT-refunds, extending a scientific-educational agreement as well as promoting cooperation between libraries and archives.

Szijjártó and Cavusoglu also agreed to convene a Hungary-Turkey mixed economic committee meeting on Feb. 22.

At the talks, the two sides confirmed their countries’ agreement on cooperation in nuclear energy training, Szijjártó said. He added that Turkey would welcome Hungary’s assistance in training engineers for two new Turkish nuclear plants currently under construction.

Szijjártó also voiced Hungary’s support for a planned strategic partnership agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan. He argued that Azerbaijan’s gas would be crucial for the bloc’s energy security.
