Budapest, November 21 (MTI) – Relations between the Hungarian government and consular leaders accredited to Hungary are “sound” and “trouble-free”, the deputy prime minister said on Monday.

Cooperation today covers an ever-expanding range of areas and in the current economic climate, the importance of the institution of honorary consul is also growing, Zsolt Semjén told a diplomatic forum in Budapest.

He said the government was working hard to harmonise the immunities and privileges related to consular duties, noting the plan to reintroduce special consular licence plates.

Semjen said that Hungary maintained diplomatic relations with almost all countries of the world, and 80 percent of such ties are on ambassadorial level.

Hungary is represented by ambassadors in 85 countries and by honorary consuls in 81 nations, he said.

Semjen expressed thanks for the honorary consuls’ services which he said created value for Hungary.
