Iconic and unique means of transport ceases operation in Budapest
The local government of Budapest, the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) and the Budapest Transport Company (BKV) decided to cease the operation of the iconic cog-wheel railway due to economic reasons.
The three bodies highlighted Budapest would save HUF 120 million (EUR 300,000) thanks to the decision. The soaring energy and fuel prices are an increasing burden on Budapest’s public transport system, the announcement noted. Furthermore, few people use cog-wheel trains during the winter season. Utilisation rate is 30 percent on the weekends but only 10 percent on workdays, Telex.hu wrote.
Instead of the cog-wheel railway, passengers may use bus lines 21, 21A, 212, 212A, 212B and 221, the companies and the local government added. Good to know that one can carry bicycles on the buses.
BKK said in a Facebook post that the cog-wheel railway awaits its passengers again from next spring.
