Info provided by former prime minister on alleged Russian blackmailing of Orbán ‘classified data’

Budapest (MTI) – Information provided by opposition Democratic Coalition leader Ferenc Gyurcsány about the alleged Russian blackmailing of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is being handled as classified data at Gyurcsány’s request, the head of parliament’s national security committee said on Wednesday.

Zsolt Molnár, of the opposition Socialists, told MTI that Gyurcsány handed over the information in his possession earlier on Wednesday. Since Gyurcsány requested that the contents of his statements should be handled as classified information, Molnár said he was unable to verify their accuracy.

The minutes of the meeting held in the national security committee’s official premises were taken but at Gyurcsány’s request they cannot be shared with others, he said.

The Socialists proposed that the committee should hear Orbán and Gyurcsány after Gyurcsány had accused Orbán that he was being blackmailed by Russia with confidential information. Ruling Fidesz reacted by saying that the Socialists and Gyurcsány should discuss their “internal warfare” with each other. Fidesz said Gyurcsány should go for a hearing to parliament’s health committee and the Socialists to the public prosecutor’s office in connection with the corruption case surrounding Budapest’s metro line four.

After last Wednesday’s national security meeting, Molnár said it was regrettable that neither Orbán nor Gyurcsány made an appearance. The heads of security services attending the meeting said no security risks affecting national sovereignty had been raised in connection with prime ministers in office since 1990, Molnár said. The other members of the body confirmed that the secret services reported no information was available showing Orbán’s involvement.
